Writing Centre Services

Undergraduate Students

The Writing Centre offers 30-minute appointments (in-person or virtual) with qualified tutors. Students can book up to three appointments per week by logging in at tru.mywconline.com.

Summer 23 Semester (May 8 to Aug. 5)

Mon. to Fri. 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Graduate Students

If you are enrolled in an online course (ending in "1") for a Master's degree, or Graduate diploma or certificate, you can book on the Undergrad or Graduate schedule.

The Writing Centre offers 45-minute appointments with qualified graduate tutors. Students can book up to two appointments per week by logging in at tru.mywconline.com.

This schedule is for students who need help with a 5000 or 6000 level course.

Graduate students are welcome to book on the Undergraduate schedule if they need help with grammar or lower level concerns.

Fall 23 Semester (Sept. 18 to Dec. 15)

Mon. to Fri. - 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Summer 23 Semester

The Graduate and Undergraduate schedules are combined.

Graduate students can make two appointments per day (or four per week.)

Tutors who are enrolled in a Master's Degree program are listed on the Undergraduate schedule.

Online Graduate Courses

In Fall 23 and Summer 23, we will offer in-person and virtual appointments (synchronous and asynchronous).

Williams Lake Students

The Writing Centre offers tutoring support for TRU students enrolled at the Williams Lake campus.

Williams Lake students can make an appointment on the Undergraduate schedule. Synchronous and asynchronous appointments are available.

If no appointment is available, send the following information to writing_ctr@tru.ca:

  • Subject line — Williams Lake
  • The course name and course number
  • Your TRU Student ID number
  • A maximum of two files (a copy of your assignment and what you have written). The file with your writing must be in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx). Maximum file size: 1 MB
  • Include a detailed description of what you’d like help with at the top of your paper, i.e., specific questions, or the areas you’d like the tutor to pay close attention to.

The Writing Centre is closed on weekends. We reply to emails Mon. to Thurs, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Open Learning Students

Improve your grade with timely writing advice from an online tutor

Two ways to get help

WriteAway logo

1. WriteAway

WriteAway is an online writing support service for Open Learning undergraduate students.

Submit up to three drafts of your paper to WriteAway, and online tutors will provide strategies and resources to help you improve your writing. Tutors do their best to share feedback within 48 hours, but response times can get longer at peak times. Please submit well in advance of your deadlines.

How to use WriteAway
  1. Connect with an online tutor at the WriteAway website.
  2. Upload your draft by filling out the online form.
  3. An email notification will let you know that feedback on your draft is ready to be downloaded.

2. Writing Centre Online

When WriteAway is closed, Open Learning students can receive same-day feedback from an online tutor through Writing Centre Online. You can make two appointments per week.

Aug. 9 to Sept. 15, 2023

How to use Writing Centre Online
  1. Log in and select the "Open Learning..." schedule.
  2. To make an appointment, click on a white box, fill out the pop up form, and click CREATE APPOINTMENT.
  3. Anytime before the appointment start time, upload a maximum of two files (a copy of your assignment instructions and what you have written). Click EDIT APPOINTMENT, click CHOOSE FILE, and click SAVE APPOINTMENT.
  4. When the tutor has reviewed your assignment, you will receive an email notification that the feedback is ready for download (by 11pm or earlier).

Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition (PLAR) for TRU students

The Writing Centre offers tutoring support for TRU students engaged in the Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition (PLAR) process. Writing Centre tutors can provide writing feedback on your PLAR portfolio.

PLAR students can make an appointment on the Undergraduate schedule in WCOnline. Both synchronous and asynchronous appointments are available.

If no appointment is available, please email the following information to writing_ctr@tru.ca:

  • Subject line — PLAR
  • Your name and TRU Student ID number
  • A maximum of two files (a copy of your assignment expectations and your draft). The file with your writing must be in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).
  • Please include a detailed description of what you'd like help with at the top of your draft, i.e., specific questions, or the areas you'd like the tutor to pay close attention to.

Appointments are asynchronous. An online tutor will read your draft, provide feedback, and upload their response, usually within two business days.
