About the centre

The Indigenous Centre at TRU is designed by Stantec Architecture and Patrick R. Stewart Architect in collaboration, with support from Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc. It will be a dedicated space that honours Secwépemc ways of knowing and being.

The centre is envisioned as a place of connection, learning and support. Rooted in Secwépemc ancestral knowledge, it will reflect Secwépemc cultural while serving the needs of today’s students.

Key features include:

  • Community gathering space inspired by ancestral Secwépemc summer lodges for cultural events, ceremonies and connection.
  • Outdoor classrooms (under consideration): Landscaping plans are being refined with the hope of incorporating Indigenous and traditional plants to create purposeful spaces for teaching and gathering.
  • Elder spaces and ceremonial rooms for reflection, guidance and ancestral practices.
  • Indigenous research and learning spaces that centre Indigenous knowledge and scholarship.
  • Student supports including quiet study rooms, lounges, computer labs and offices for Indigenous faculty, staff and community partners.

A commitment to reconciliation

The Indigenous Centre will be more than a building. It represents TRU’s responsibility to support Indigenous students, to advance reconciliation and to honour both the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

This centre will play a vital role in TRU’s commitment to eliminating achievement gaps for Indigenous learners, and will serve as a gathering place where respect, understanding and collaboration can thrive.
