Monica Cheng

Monica is a partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon, LLP where she practises in all areas of income tax law. She advises on corporate reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, and financings involving corporations and private equity funds. Her practice includes both domestic and international tax matters in the oil and gas, renewable energy, technology, infrastructure, and retail sectors.

Monica frequently presents and publishes on a variety of tax matters. Her recent research focuses on derivative tax liabilities in Canadian tax law including directors’ liability and section 160 of the Income Tax Act. Her research draws from critical legal scholarship in addressing equity and fairness concerns. She is a contributing editor of Taxation of Corporate Reorganizations.

Prior to entering private practice, Monica clerked for the judges of the Tax Court of Canada.

Monica joined TRU as a sessional instructor in 2019. She has also guest lectured at the University of Calgary, University of Ottawa, and McGill University. She will be teaching Basic Tax law for the 2022-23 academic year.
