The Cowichan Valley Bar Association (CVBA) is made up of lawyers practicing in the Cowichan Valley. For many years members have supported a Bursary to encourage and assist students in their law related field of study.

A purpose of the CVBA is to encourage the practice of law according to the best traditions of the Bar, which include professionalism, hard work, integrity, ethical practice, skill development, client loyalty, collegiality, service to the community and a willingness to give back to the community by helping others in need.

The Bursary is provided in honour of, and is dedicated to the memory of two of the finest legal practitioners in the Cowichan Valley, David Williams Q.C. (1923-1999) and Donald Taylor Q.C. (1948-2009). Mr. Williams and Mr. Taylor both demonstrated practice in the best traditions of the Bar.

BURSARY: Each year the CVBA membership allocates funds to be awarded to a deserving applicant. The Bursary awarded this year will be $1,000.00. Interested applicants must demonstrate a connection to the Cowichan Valley and attendance during the 2017-2018 academic year in either post-secondary education or training, in a law related field such as law school, legal assistant, policing, criminology, and court services.

Qualified applicants are invited to submit an introductory letter together with resume or other materials the applicant considers relevant. Qualified applicants will be considered in relation to the following criteria:

  • Community Service
  • Hard work
  • Achievement in studies
  • Financial need

Law School Entrance Scholarships

The Law Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1984 established funding for up to three annual Law School Entrance Scholarships, in honour of the incorporation of the Law Society in 1834.

The 2019/2020 Scholarships, valued at $5,000.00 (five thousand dollars) each, are tenable for first-year studies at any Canadian law School recognized by the Scholarships Board. The Scholarships are payable in two instalments. Applications must be received by May 1, 2019, and the Scholarships will be awarded during the month of June. Awards will be made on the basis of academic ability.

Conditions of Eligibility

A candidate must:

  • be a resident of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador; and,
  • have achieved academic excellence.

The CFUW AWA will be granted for studies in specific programs of Law, Medicine, Nurse Practitioner or a Masters in Aboriginal Studies as outlined in the application instructions. The award is renewable as it is designed to help a successful winner by providing the award for a second year. In the event the winner does not request the second year of support, this award will be offered every second year.

Peter J. Wilson Bursary- Offered by the Criminal Defence Advocacy Society

This bursary is awarded to a student who displays an interest in criminal law and who has entered their second or third year of the J.D. program at a recognized law school in British Columbia. The bursary is in the amount of $1000 and is awarded at the discretion of the Criminal Defence Advocacy Society on the basis of financial need and demonstrated interest in criminal law. The bursary is in honour of Peter J. Wilson, Q.C., now retired. Peter is one of the most accomplished and respected criminal trial lawyers to have practiced in this province. Peter retired from the practice of law in 2018, after 30 years of conducting countless serious criminal trials. He was masterful before a jury and never failed to give his time to his colleagues at the bar. The Criminal Defence Advocacy Society sponsors this bursary as a tribute to Peter’s contributions to the justice system and the profession, with faith that tomorrow’s generation of criminal lawyers will continue in the highest traditions of advocacy.
