Preparing Your Professional Portfolio
Will you need a teaching or professional role portfolio in the near future? Does your current portfolio need a facelift? A teaching or professional role portfolio is a critical component for the tenure and promotion process. This workshop will cover the components of the portfolio including writing a philosophy of teaching statement, the format of an academic CV, and ways to evidence your teaching and professional development. Paper based and electronic portfolio samples will be shared. Participants may be at any stage of their portfolio development. Please bring your portfolio in whatever state it may be in for feedback.
Writing a Philosophy of Education Statement
What is effective teaching? If you have never written a Philosophy of Teaching Statement (POTS), this workshop is for you! A Philosophy of Teaching Statement is a required component of a professional portfolio when one is going forward for Tenure and/or Promotion. This hands-on session will begin with a presentation of the components of a POTS, a pair/group critique of some sample POTS, and end with a 20 minute guided writing exercise to begin exploring your philosophy of teaching and learning.
Evidencing Your Teaching for Promotion, Tenure, and Awards
Throughout your teaching career, you may be asked to demonstrate your teaching proficiency or excellence. This request may relate to a component of a tenure or promotion dossier or to your nomination for a teaching award. This workshop will explore dimensions of teaching using an educational leadership mapping tool that will help to evidence and support your teaching skills beyond course evaluations.
Developing Your e-Portfolio
E-portfolios are increasingly used in higher education, the public sector, private industry, and elsewhere to highlight individual and team accomplishments, and to share pertinent information and content which lives online such as various kinds of projects. They are also increasingly being used to highlight professional development and growth. In this afternoon session, participants will discuss the value of e-portfolios for professional development and growth, review examples of e-portfolios from TRU faculty and staff, and explore features of WordPress which support e-portfolios. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on practice in which they will be able to create an e-portfolio to highlight their professional and academic accomplishments at TRU. In order to make the most of the session, participants should be prepared to review some content and complete other learning activities before the session (details will be provided via email).
