GERM 1111: Introductory German 1
Learners develop cultural knowledge and communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in modern standard German. Upon successful completion of this course, students demonstrate a CEFR A1.1 level of proficiency.
Learning outcomes
- Introduce themselves and respond to introductions of others.
- Introduce another person.
- Interact and answer simple questions about nationality, origin, and habitation.
- Participate in simple conversations about familiar topics, such as health, family, weather, and vacations.
- Ask for and/or give something, for example food and drinks.
- Describe a person, an event, a situation, and familiar surroundings.
- Comment on leisure and sport activities.
- Answer phone calls with simple greetings.
- Understand short, simple texts.
- Write expressions and simple isolated phrases.
- Identify basic cultural, linguistic, and historic idiosyncrasies of German culture from around the world.
- Demonstrate a CEFR A1.1 level of proficiency.
Course topics
- Folge/ Episode 1: Introductions, pronunciation, popular objects and common phrases
- Folge/ Episode 2: How to ask questions, how to talk about things and activities we like, and how to count, some geography of Europe, and some of the names of countries in German
- Folge/ Episode 3: German culture, telling the time, different food and drink items, and what you do when you want to eat out, whether it is at a food stand or a fine restaurant
- Folge/ Episode 4: Shopping on the “Zeil”, specials offered by the Galeria, the German family and the Dackelfamilie of Emma and Emil, how to talk about our daily activities and how to introduce courses of study, professions, and occupations.
- Folge/ Episode 5: Our wishes and dreams, conducting interviews with friends and family members, sightseeing in Frankfurt, and exploring German and European culture a bit more.

Assessments
To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course and 50% or higher on the final mandatory exams (oral and written).
