International Mobility Study Abroad Award

International Mobility Study Abroad Award of $1,000 /per is awarded per semester to assist TRU undergraduate students fund their study abroad/exchange experience. 

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be approved by the TRU Study Abroad Program to participate on an exchange
  • Be a full-time registered undergraduate student for each academic term
  • Provide a copy of the Host School Acceptance Letter
  • Complete all required steps as directed by the Study Abroad Office prior to receiving the bursary.

Awards will be applied to the student’s myTRU account. Students who withdraw from the Study Abroad Exchange Program will not be eligible. TRU Study Abroad has the authority to terminate the award if the student’s behaviour is detrimental to the program, to others, to themselves, to TRU, or to any international host partner/organization.

TRU students who participates on a faculty led, field school trip for credit, are eligible for the Student Field School Award of $500.


Global Skills Oppertunity Exchange Scholarship. 

The Canadian government has launched a new program to encourage university students to take advantage of global opportunities during their degree at TRU. The first round will be availble this winter for all destination except the United Kingdon, the US, France and Australia.

While open to all Canadian post-secondary students, the national program targets groups for whom international experiences have traditionally been less accessible — specifically Indigenous students, students from low-income backgrounds and those with disabilities. It also aims to diversify destination countries where Canadian students pursue international learning.

For the 2023 Fall semester, we will offer 2 x $2,500 scholarship for semester long exchange. Student must be in an undergraduate program and complete pre and post trip survey.

IK Barber One World Scholarships

The Irving K Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society provides two funding opportunities to assist students wishing to study in other countries.

One World International Scholarship Program

Administered automatically through the Study Abroad Office — students do not need to apply. The number of awards available varies depending on the endowment awarded to Thompson Rivers University; the awards are given to Study Abroad applicants based on cumulative GPAs in the amount of $2,000 per student. Qualifying students normally receive notice from the Study Abroad Office in December. No application is required.

Premier’s International Scholarship

Intended for students who are enrolled in overseas programs. Students must complete and submit an application directly to the Victoria Foundation and Premier’s scholarships are funded from the returns on a $15 million endowment fund established by the Province of BC for international education. The scholarships are part of the One World international scholarship program managed by the Society. The Ministry of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills provided an additional $2 million for the program in 2012 as part of British Columbia’s International Education Strategy.

TRUSU CUEF Grant Proposal

Students are invited to submit a proposal to TRUSU. The Students’ Union and the University have partnered to provide funding to offset the cost for students to attend conferences and host events.

Funding is provided through the Comprehensive University Enhancement Fund (CUEF) and administered by the TRU Students’ Union through an application process. Please keep in mind funding is limited and priority will be given to first time applicants and applications that make cost-effective and efficient use of funding.
