Biosafety

In order to provide a safe working and learning environment for staff, students and visitors working with biohazardous materials, Thompson Rivers University has established a comprehensive biosafety program as set forth by the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in accordance with the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act and the Human Pathogens and Toxins Regulations.

Biohazardous materials are materials of biological origin that may be potentially harmful to humans, animals, plants or the environment and include:

• Pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses, fungi, parasites and bacteria.
• Biological toxins from microorganisms, plants, and animals.
• Materials that may contain the above-mentioned agents (e.g. cell cultures; tissue, blood and body fluids from humnas and animals; environmental samples).
• Certain proteins and nucleic acids.
• Genetically modified organisms that may be hazardous to the environment if released.

Prior to conducting any new studies involving biohazardous materials, a biohazard permit application must be submitted via the ROMEO system. If there are significant changes to a previously approved permit, such as new biological materials or procedures, a new application must be submitted.
