Emergency Evacuation Zones
TRU has introduced three Emergency Evacuation Zones on the Kamloops campus to support emergency preparedness and coordination during large-scale incidents.
The zones provide a consistent, easily identifiable system for students, employees, visitors and emergency responders. Become familiar with the zones, signs and map before an emergency occurs.
Know your zone
The three zones are identified using Secwépemc place-based names and animal representations. New outdoor signs have been installed across campus to identify each zone.

Building muster stations have not changed
Emergency Evacuation Zones do not replace existing building muster stations or current evacuation procedures.
During a regular building evacuation, continue to leave the building as directed and report to your designated building muster station.
Emergency Evacuation Zones are intended for larger-scale incidents when it may be necessary to evacuate a significant portion of campus or the entire campus and relocate people to broader designated areas. If the zones need to be used during an emergency, follow instructions from TRU and emergency personnel.
Stay informed with the TRU Safe App
In the event of an evacuation, emergency alerts and instructions will be sent through the TRU Safe App. Make sure you have the app and that notifications are turned on so you receive important updates when they are issued.
Visit the TRU Safe App web page for more information .
Why Emergency Evacuation Zones?
The new system is intended to strengthen emergency preparedness and campus-wide evacuation coordination. Clearly identified zones can also support communication and accountability during a large-scale emergency and provide a consistent system for students, employees, visitors and emergency responders.
Secwépemc language and placemaking
The Emergency Evacuation Zone system incorporates Secwépemc language and culturally significant animal representations through Sk'elep (Coyote), Xgwélemc (Fox) and Mélemst’ye (Wolf).
Their inclusion aligns with TRU's ongoing efforts to incorporate Indigenous placemaking, cultural visibility and meaningful wayfinding across campus.
Be prepared
Before an emergency, take a few minutes to:
- Identify the Emergency Evacuation Zone for the areas of campus you use most often.
- Become familiar with the signs and animal identifiers.
- Know your building's existing muster station.
- Review the Emergency Evacuation Zone map.
