Biohazardous Waste Disposal

Nurses

  1. Only the red bags exhibiting the universal biohazard symbol are to be used in the white, biohazard waste receptacle. No sharps are to be put in the bag.
  2. When the bag is 3/4 full, seal the bag with a twist tie.
  3. Remove the bag from the step-on garbage can. Check bag for leakage. If leakage has occurred, put a second, clean biohazard bag over the original. The step-on can will then require decontamination with 1% Sodium Hypochlorite.
  4. Place the biohazard bag in the grey bucket exhibiting the biohazard symbol.
  5. Contact Security and tell them biohazard material is ready for transport to the Ken Lepin Science and Health Sciences Building.

Security

  1. Go to Health Services and pick up the bucket containing the biohazard bag. There is no reason to touch the bag at this time.
  2. Take the bucket to S365E (Microbiology). Lift the bag out of the bucket by the top of the bag. There is no need to grab the bag on the sides and/or bottom.
  3. Place the bag in the large red plastic garbage can with the biohazard symbols. This can is sitting in front of the autoclave (behind the door in S365E).
  4. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  5. Return the bucket to the Health Nurse’s office.

Notes to Security:
Do not transport biohazardous material after hours. If the bag splits or there is a biohazard spill, you will require the assistance of OH&S.

A small biohazard spill kit is in the bucket. Please ensure that it remains with the bucket and that you know how to use it. If it gets used, contact OH&S immediately for a replacement.
