Frequently Asked Questions
As the new TRU spectrum of delivery and learning modes obtained Senate approval in April 2026, departments and Faculty Councils voted to retire the print mode of courses. There were many legacy and outdated components of these courses that required us to compose a set of new course access options that aligned with technology and access options for students with limited to no internet. TRU Open Learning examined the options available via the changes that were happening in the distance learning and post-secondary education sector such as:
- Changes in web technologies (modern browsers are now able to easily print web page content so Moodle course pages can be printed).
- Publishers have moved away from print/book manufacturers to digital learning platform providers and focus on digital versions of their textbooks.
- Publishers are pushing updates to their book titles through a “digital-first” strategy only to their digital editions as less costly than to print versions of the textbook.
- More Open Educational Resources (OERs) have become available in the past decade including open textbooks which are free resources that often have a downloadable and multi-format accessible option for using offline.
- TRU Open Learning development methods were not fully leveraged (web pages we design already that could be packaged and offered to students to view offline).
- TRU Open Learning can design components (PDF copies of modules) that might provide more options for learners than printed paper had in the past
- We engage with local, provincial and federal organizations and institutions to discover other methods to provide learning opportunities to students with limited or no internet access.
TRU remains committed to providing learners with access to courses that can successfully be completed in a limited to no internet environment.
Course access formatsOpen Learning will work with students and appropriate correctional, community, Indigenous or student-support contacts to identify practical solutions and develop reasonable accommodations when there is limited or no internet access. Some of the options that may be available include the following.
Course access formats- Access Format 1: Moodle Course Access with Offline Learning
- Access Format 2: Moodle Course Proxy Access Learning
- Access Format 3: Web Pages Course Access and Offline Learning
- Access Format 4: PDF Course Access and Offline Learning
TRU is transitioning away from institution-produced print course packages, not discontinuing courses. Course materials remain available through a variety of options. If all the options have been explored and the student needs a printed package of the course (if available), TRU will support this accommodation.

Course access formatsTRU recognizes that incarcerated and other students may not have internet access. We will work with affected students and appropriate support contacts to provide practical access to course materials where internet access is unavailable. The course registration form has been updated with a section for students to share their limited to no internet access details and comments on the options that might be suitable for them. There remains a checkbox to indicate if you are an incarcerated student.

No. These options will decrease the cost to students compared to the former print versions that charged students a fee to cover the printing and mailing costs.
Your registration will be sent to the Open Learning Delivery department who will contact you to discuss which course access option best meets your needs.
