Course Access Formats

TRU has four course access formats to support students with limited to no internet access. If you have questions, please reach out to us at deliverysupport2@tru.ca to learn more.

On the TRU Open Learning course registration form you will see a place to identify if you have “limited or no internet access”. There is also a section where you can tell us about your situation.

Important to note for all students: Textbooks and Learning Materials

Textbook and/or other learning materials may be only available in an internet-accessible format (e.g., e-textbook version or publisher app/platform), even if the course content is available for students with limited or no internet access. The textbook or other learning materials may also be in a format that permits downloadable versions for offline use (e.g., open textbooks with PDF or Kindle/reader versions, e-textbooks with desktop or mobile apps for an initial internet download but offline use).

Some courses may require additional learning materials, such as a kit of physical materials. Since textbooks and other learning materials may be produced in formats that change over time, course access formats may also change. Please reach out to us for updated details.

Some courses may require additional learning materials, such as a kit of physical materials.

Access Format 1: Moodle Course Access with Offline Learning

Who is the course best for?

This is for the student who has intermittent access to the internet but will complete most of the course work offline.

How does it work?

The student enrolled in a TRU Open Learning course (online, self-paced, independent learning), accesses course materials when they have access to the internet, prints course pages (web pages) and/or downloads other printable materials included in the course for offline access. The student uploads digitally completed assignments when they have access to the internet.

NOTE: See note above about textbooks and learning resources.

Access Format 2: Moodle Course Proxy Access Learning

Who is the course best for?

This is for the student who knows someone who has access to the internet and can provide hard copies of the course materials to them. The student may also have intermittent access to the internet.

How does it work?

The student enrols in a TRU Open Learning course (online self-paced, independent learning) then authorizes a proxy — a family member, friend, education coordinator, social worker, or institutional staff member — under a signed proxy agreement. The proxy is not enrolled in the course and does not participate in it; instead, they are given permission in the Moodle course to retrieve materials, pass them to the student, and return the student's completed work. The proxy uploads digitally completed assignments and shares the feedback and marks with student.

NOTE: See note above about textbooks and learning resources.

Access Format 3: Web Pages Course Access and Offline Learning

Who is the course best for?

This is for the student who has no access to the internet.

How does it work?

The student or an organization is provided with a file of the TRU Open Learning course via email attachment, USB or CD/DVD. The file contains the collection of course web pages that can be viewed with no internet but will allow navigation and access as if being viewed online. Any outside links to internet materials will not work. We may also need to provide a USB or a CD with media content (e.g., videos) required for the course. The student emails assignments to TRU Open Learning for grading when they have access to email or the organization/institution emails on their behalf. NOTE: See note above about textbooks and learning resources.

Access Format 4: PDF Course Access and Offline Learning

Who is the course best for?

This is for the student who has no access to the internet.

How does it work?

The student or an organization is provided with a PDF copy of the course that they download via a dedicated link. The course and most to all its materials are accessed offline by the student. We may also need to provide a USB or a CD with media content (e.g., videos) required for the course. The student emails assignments to TRU Open Learning for grading when they have access to email or the organization/institution emails on their behalf.

NOTE: See note above about textbooks and learning resources.

Custom Access Format

If the above four access format do not fully support your learning, let us know your situation and we’ll develop a custom collection of course materials to align with your access needs. If your learning is best served by some parts of the course being printed for offline use, please reach out to us deliverysupport2@tru.ca.
