Parking Lottery (2022/23)

Lotteries for long-term parking permits for the 2022/23 year on the TRU hangTag portal close on June 17 (premium permits) and July 15 (reserved permits).

Accepting your fall 2022 premium lottery parking permit
The premium lottery will be drawn the morning of Monday, June 20. If you are a premium lottery winner, you will receive an email notification sent to the email address used in your HangTag profile to accept or decline your permit. If you did not receive an email, please check your spam or junk folder. You have three days to accept or decline. Any permits not accepted within 72 hours will be withdrawn.
You are not eligible to win more than once for a premium lottery. If you are offered a premium permit and decline it, your remaining options are to enter the reserved lottery by July 15, purchase a general or economy permit, or apply to a waitlist for any cancelled or unsold permits. (Long-term permits for general and economy lots and waitlists will open Aug. 2.)

Lottery rules

You can only apply for three lots in the premium lottery, and/or three lots in the reserved lottery. For your preferred lot(s), choose one permit type only. Choosing more than one permit per lot does not increase your chances and complicates the awarding phase. (Note: the reserved lottery closes after premium so if you do not receive a premium permit, there's still time to enter for a reserved permit.)

View the new fall 2022/winter 2023 parking map to view the premium and reserved lots in effect starting Sept. 1, 2022.

You are not eligible to win more than once for the same lottery. If you are offered a premium permit and decline it, your remaining options are to enter the reserved lottery or to purchase a general or economy permit. (Long-term permits for general and economy lots will open Aug. 2.)

After premium applications close on June 17, the premium lottery will be drawn in this order: C, D2, V1, S and T2. Once all available permits are allotted for lot C, those recipients of lot C permits are removed from the premium lottery and will be notified to accept or decline their permits. The available permits for lot D2 are allotted next, and those recipients removed, etc.

If, for example, you apply for lots C and V1, and you are one of the recipients of a lot C permit, you will be removed from the list drawing for lot V1 permits. If you are offered a lot V1 permit—drawn third after C and D2—you can assume you were unsuccessful in the draw for lot C.

After reserved applications close on July 15, the reserved lottery will be drawn in this order: A3, B, L, L1, R, D1, K, F and EC, following the same process as premium, above. Note, because 2021/22 reserved permit-holders are eligible to renew their current permits, there may be few or no available spaces for new applicants in some lots.

How to enter the lottery

  1. Log into the TRU hangTag portal, or set up a new account with profile and vehicle information if you don’t yet have one.
  2. On the "Buy ePermits" tab, click on the "ePermit Group" button and choose the filter called “2022-23 Lottery”, which will drill down to just TRU’s fall/winter premium and reserved permits.
  3. Find your first choice of up to three premium and/or reserved lots that work for you in the filtered list. E.g. “Lot C – Premium Parking”. Check: if you want to pay via payroll deduction, you must select a permit type with “Payroll Deduction” in the name, otherwise it will ask you for credit card information. Please make your selection carefully to ensure you have chosen the right lot and the permit type you want.
  4. Click the "Join Waitlist" button. This will send the Parking Office a notification to add you to the lottery for that premium or reserved lot. You will receive a confirmation email from hangTag support; ensure they are on your safe sender list.
  5. Repeat this selection if desired for a second and third choice of lot. If you are applying for premium, you can wait for the lottery results and then return to the portal before July 15 to apply for up to three reserved lots if you wish. Check: if you will be paying by credit card, ensure your information is accurate in your profile—a declined payment will cancel your permit offer.

Notifications to confirm permit purchase

The premium permit lottery closes at 4pm Friday, June 17. Notifications to recipients will begin on June 20. The reserved permit lottery closes Friday, July 15. Notifications to recipients will begin on July 19.

If you are allotted a permit, you will receive a permit offer from hangTag by email. You will have three days (including weekends) to accept or decline your permit, via a link in the email. This link will work on any device with a web browser.

Payment is by credit card on the date you click accept, or by payroll deduction beginning on the effective date of your permit, Sept. 1, 2022.

Waitlist begins Aug. 2

Anyone who missed the lottery or was not successful in getting a premium or reserved permit can apply, starting Aug. 2, to be on a waitlist if permits become available. Lottery applicants will not be automatically added to the August waitlist—you must re-apply.

Any declined, cancelled or unsold premium or reserved permits will be allotted automatically to waitlist applicants on a first-come, first-served basis starting Aug. 2 and continuing into fall semester. Like the lottery, recipients from the waitlist will have three days to accept or decline the permit offered before it is offered to the next person on the list. Look for future communications about the waitlist in July.
