TRU students' Union

The TRU Students' Union (TRUSU) provides a variety of services to all students of TRU to ensure students are valued and supported. TRUSU hires students to work at the information booths, front desk and the student-run coffee shop, Common Grounds. Most recruiting occurs during the summer and hiring takes place in late August. Jobs are posted as positions become available.

Co-operative education

Co-operative education is an opportunity for students to enhance their education through career-related work experience while studying at TRU. It combines practical in-class education with applied learning opportunities. A variety of on-campus positions are available for co-op students per semester. Undergrad or graduate teaching assistant

Teaching assistants are employed by TRU to assist instructional faculty in duties such as: demonstrating labs and leading discussion periods, tutorials and seminars based on the guidance and direction received from faculty members and marking exams, tests, lab exercises and assignments, field work or associated invigilation duties, under the academic supervision of faculty. Teaching Assistants will work under the academic supervision and ongoing day to day supervision of a faculty member and the overall administrative supervision of the relevant Chair and Dean.

To be eligible for a Teaching Assistant position, students must meet the following criteria:

Undergraduate teaching assistant

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate program at TRU
  • Completed at least 50% of their current program of study
  • Enrolled in at least 3.0 credits for the semester in which they would be employed
  • A minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency

Graduate teaching assistant

  • Enrolled in a graduate degree program at TRU
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency

An UTA or GTA is limited to ten (10) hours per week and a maximum of one hundred and forty (140) hours of employment in any semester.

Undergraduate and graduate teaching positions are advertised in the relevant department and on Career & Experiential Learning’s Career Connections job board.

Once hired, the student TA must complete paperwork to let HR know who has been hired, initiate the payroll process, and inform IT for email access. Forms can be accessed by the faculty member through People and Culture’s OneTRU or by emailing hrofficers@tru.ca

Explore Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Undergraduate or graduate student research assistant

Engage in collaborative research endeavors with faculty members who require student assistance in ongoing research projects. If you are interested in contributing to a research project and gaining hands on experience in your field of study, we encourage you to discuss a Research Assistant opportunity with your professors.

TRU offers Research Assistant opportunities to both graduate and undergraduate students. Research Assistants are hired as employees of TRU. Once approved by a faculty member to work as an assistant, that faculty member must submit the necessary forms to TRU’s People and Culture team.

University Research Experience Award Program (UREAP)

The Undergraduate Research Experience Award Program (UREAP) is a $6,000 scholarship that can help students get started with their own original research. It is a way to improve your resume, increase your academic and professional success, and make your time in university more interesting and rewarding.

Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Undergraduate Student Research Awards (NSERC USRA)

This award provides $6,000 funding from NSERC and an additional (minimum) 25% ($1,500) from faculty for domestic or permanent resident undergraduate students in the natural sciences and engineering to engage in research over a 16-week period over the summer (May to August). These are competitive national-level awards (unlimited awards available for Indigenous Students).

Students who currently hold a UREAP may not apply for this award using the same project. Students must discuss this opportunity with a faculty member they would like to work with. Faculty members who are authorized to independently supervise students may mentor.
