Thompson Rivers University is preparing to welcome new and returning students by expanding services and access prior to class start on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
“The next few days are all about students,” said Peter Hilton, TRU Vice Provost Students. “We are open longer, even on Labour Day, so students can access services earlier and quicker. We understand that the first few days are important for students, and we want to go the extra yard to help them."
The best day for local students to Jump the Line is Friday, Sept. 4. The university is open 8am to 4pm, allowing ample time for students to register for courses, pay fees, get their student card, pick up parking or transit passes, and if they need to, drop in at Academic Advising.
For students arriving from out of town over the weekend, they can Jump the Line on Labour Day, Monday, Sept. 7 from 10 am until 2pm. Tim Horton’s on Student Street will also be open.
TRU Student Union will be available at their office from 9 am to 4pm each day, in the Independent Centre for students to get their U-pass or to opt out of medical benefits (if applicable).
On Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 9 and 10, the TRU Bookstore has extended its hours of service until 9pm to accommodate students waiting until the first two days of class to buy their books. Other services such as cashier, registrar’s office and financial aid will extend their hours until 6 pm as well.
Last year, the TRU Senate passed a bylaw to start classes one day later than the traditional Tuesday after Labour Day. The Tuesday is now scheduled as a day long Orientation that includes First year and returning students.
Sukh Herr Matonovich, former head coach of UCC’s Sun Demons Women’s Volleyball team and TRU Distinguished Alumni has returned to TRU from Pacific Sport for the new position of the First Year Experience Coordinator.
“Tuesday, Sept. 8 is set-aside for Orientation and you don’t have to be a new student to get informed,” Matonovich said. “Besides welcoming speeches we’ll be giving students tips on surviving September, staying connected, finances and research techniques beyond Google.”
Students can register for Orientation by Friday, Sept. 4 on the web at tru.ca/studentservices/orientation.html
