New Dean of Arts

October 3, 2005

Dr. Ulrich Scheck will be Thompson Rivers University's new Dean of Arts, TRU Vice-President, Academic and Provost, Dr. Mark Evered, announced today.

"Dr. Scheck comes with outstanding academic credentials and administrative experience", said Evered. "We are extremely pleased that we were able to convince him to leave his position as Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at Queen's University in Kingston Ontario to lead TRU's largest academic division."

Dr. Scheck had also held the positions of Professor and Queen's National Scholar and had previously served as the Director of International Programs for the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University.

"What attracted me to TRU most is the unique opportunity to build a distinct and open institution on the foundation of TRU's long-standing tradition of welcoming a very diverse group of students," said Dr. Scheck. "It is a truly exciting prospect to be part of the emergence of a new university," he said. "TRU has the potential to take on a leadership role in combining academic excellence with educational choice."

Scheck, who aims to focus on cross-disciplinary teaching, research and learning, as well as on opportunities to build innovative undergraduate and graduate programs, has plans to further the internationalization of TRU's arts programs, including enhancing study abroad opportunities and developing joint degree programs with universities outside Canada.

Part of the reason for Scheck's international perspective may be his own background. German by birth, Dr. Scheck completed an honours bachelor's degree in German and philosophy from the University of Mannheim, Germany, before coming to Canada to complete MA and PhD degrees in German at the University of Waterloo.

He is also looking forward to increasing educational choices to off-campus learners through TRU's Open Learning division.

"During the '90s I developed the curricula for several German language and culture courses for Continuing and Distance Studies at Queen's University," he said. "I strongly believe in offering educational opportunities to as many people as possible, and distance education plays an important part in providing access to learning."

Dr. Evered, who led the international search for the new dean, said the search committee was very impressed by Dr. Scheck's broad knowledge, by his scholarship, by his leadership experience and by his enthusiasm for exploring new opportunities.

"He brings the academic credibility, the experience and the spirit that will be invaluable in helping us build our unique institution", said Evered.

"He has authored and edited over a dozen books, and has published numerous refereed articles, reference works and reviews. He has organized many conferences, symposia, and workshops, held offices in various professional societies and been invited as consultant and examiner to a number of national and international universities and institutes. His academic work has been supported by national and international agencies, and he has been very active in graduate as well as undergraduate education," explained Evered.

Scheck, who assumed his new position at TRU October 3, also plans to become an active member of the community and its culture. "My main passion outside of academe is music," he said. "I play keyboards and look forward to hooking up with a classic rock or blues band in Kamloops," he added.

More students attending TRU this fall

October 5, 2005

The fall enrolment numbers are in, and there are more students than ever studying at Thompson Rivers University, BC's newest provincial university based in Kamloops, BC.

Headcount enrolments have increased 4 per cent over last fall, meaning there are almost 7,500 students registered in degree, diploma and certificate programs at the university this fall. The largest single group of students are those in undergraduate and graduate-level degree programs, where almost 5,200 students are registered in over 50 degree program options. These students are also taking more courses, as overall course registrations showed an even greater increase.

The totals also include 429 students studying at TRU's Williams Lake campus, an increase of 7 per cent over last fall.

TRU's Kamloops campus is also host to a record number of international students. A total of 812 students from 53 countries are on campus at present, an increase of 6 per cent over last fall.

Of note in the fall numbers is that fact that many lower-level university students have not yet returned to campus, electing instead to take advantage of employment options being provided by the strong provincial economy. As a result, an even greater increase in enrolments is anticipated in the winter semester, as many of these students have already started the process of registering for courses they will take when they return in January.

Applications for admission to TRU programs that begin in September 2006 opened on Monday of this week (Oct 3rd) and are now beginning to arrive from students across Canada. Students can apply to TRU online, where they can also pay the $25 application fee, one of the lowest in the province.

Academia meets the Arts

October 12, 2005

How many times have we heard or said, "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like."

An exhibit that explores this topic opens at the Kamloops Art Gallery Saturday, October 15.

"We all respond differently to works of art. Sometimes artworks seem relatively easy to understand: we 'get' their meaning or feel their impact right away. Other artworks seem designed to confound us, to challenge us as viewers," said Dr. Will Garrett-Petts, a Thompson Rivers University professor and researcher who is co-curating, along with TRU colleague Dr. Rachel Nash, an exhibition called Proximities: Artists' Statements and Their Works, opening this Saturday at 7:30 pm.

So, does an 'artist's statement' help?

"When we enter a gallery space, we have choices to make," said Garrett-Petts. "Some head directly to the artworks, letting them speak for themselves. Others habitually read the titles first-and still others look to the artists' written statements, even before viewing the works. The words, whether they are read before or after looking closely at the individual artworks, provide us with a context for viewing.

"Proximities explores what happens when artists' words and images work together, or collide and contradict."

But, should art lovers search for deeper meaning, or just let everything flow?

"According to some artists and critics, the search for meaning can get in the way of our authentic or "gut" response; as Archibald MacLeish once said of poetry, art ?should not mean but be.? For most of us, however, understanding an artwork's meaning is part of the pleasure of going to galleries," he explained.

Gallery-goers will have the chance to hear what artists themselves say about artist's statements.

"What artists say or write about their own works is inherently interesting. Their words, their statements, provide us with unique insights into their practices. For working artists, the opportunity to speak and write about their art is part opportunity and part obligation," said Garrett-Petts.

On Sunday at 1:00 pm, artists Donald Lawrence and Ashok Mathur of TRU, along with Stephan Kurr (Germany), Paula Levine (San Francisco), KristiMalakoff (Vancouver), Jan Peacock (Halifax), Brenda Pelkey (Windsor), Brigitte Radecki (Montreal), and Sandra Semchuk (Vancouver), will discuss issues around artist's statements at a panel presentation to be held at the Kamloops Art Gallery.

Both the Saturday opening reception and Sunday panel presentation are open to all.

For more information, please contact Dr. Will Garrett-Petts at 250-828-5248 or email.

Foundation Kick-off a Success

October 13, 2005

They served more sausages than ever before at the TRU Foundation's Annual Campaign Kick-Off Breakfast this morning.

Two hundred and fifty people, 100 more than last year, attended the morning's event, which raised $19,000 for student scholarships and bursaries and other projects at TRU.

"Last year, even though the Foundation awarded over 1,000 scholarships and bursaries to students, there were another 642 students that applied for financial aid and did not get it," said Foundation Chairperson Paul Wright. "We estimate the unmet need for student assistance was over $600,000. We want to bridge this gap."

Also speaking at the breakfast was Melanie Conrad, a TRU Bachelor of Science degree graduate now a PhD candidate at UVic, who gave the assembled benefactors a student's view of financial support.

"I would like to say thank you again to Joan and Errol, the TRU Foundation, and people like you for providing a support structure to help me realize my dreams. I wouldn't be where I am today without all of you," she concluded.

The Foundation is a non-profit society with a volunteer board of 16 directors and 73 volunteer society members from the community working on four committees.

Last year the TRU Foundation raised over $1 million to benefit TRU students through donors establishing a new award, renewing commitments to an existing annual award, or increasing the value of their endowment funds.

Funds are also raised through various TRU affiliated groups that contribute money for a specific purpose like the Sports Task Force who work diligently to raise money to help student athletes.

Gaming revenue, income from the Foundation's $7 million endowment fund, its direct mail campaign and award-winning events like the annual Foundation Gala add to student award funds. As well, the Foundation's planned giving program, in which donors leave a legacy through a gift in their wills or life insurance policies, raised over $1 million from donors last year.

This year's Kick-off Breakfast was sponsored by Howard Bingham Hill Architects. For more information, please contact Karen Gamracy at 371-5715 or email.
