Tsunami Relief Benefit Concert Planned
Jan. 18, 2005
KAMLOOPS-Inspired students in cooperation with the Cariboo Student
Society are putting together a Benefit concert to attempt to raise
funds for victims of the Tsunami in South Asia on December 26, 2004.
The concert will take place on January 28, 2005 7:00 pm, in the
Independent Center at the University College of the Cariboo. This
will be a collaborative effort between students at UCC and people from
the Kamloops community in an attempt to foster something positive in
the wake of disaster.
All funds raised will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.
King Size Suzi, Midlife Crisis, Seven Second Delay, A Cold Home In
The Sun, Graham Lazarovich, Paul Filek, and a special guest DJ are
some great live bands from the community who have already come forward
and agreed to play for this charity event. We encourage other live
bands to contact us if they would like to showcase their talents or
help in any way.
Lee's Music has generously agreed to sponsor this event by donating a
sound system for this benefit concert.
A combination of Punk, Metal, Rock, Blues, Jazz, and Techno music
will be showcased. This event is guaranteed to be a night of
entertainment and variety that should not be missed.
Tickets are $5.00 in advance and $7.00 at the door. Monitory
donations welcome. Advanced tickets can be bought from the Cariboo
Student Society, UCC Info Booth, Spinners Sound Centre or Tony Romas
(from the Kamloops location a $5.00 gift certificate to Tony Romas
will be awarded for each ticket sale, while quantities last).

KAMLOOPS-The standards are high, and these students have met them. On
Tuesday, January 11th at 4:00 pm at the Accolades dining room located
in the UCC Food Training Centre, four UCC students will receive
Millennium scholarships, while three others are presented with UCC
Ambassador's Entrance Scholarships.
The UCC Ambassadors Entrance Scholarship, an open scholarship
available to first-time students who have not previously attended
college or university in Canada, recognizes academic excellence,
leadership and community service. Students who receive this award,
which requires at least an 80% average, also accept the responsibility
of some level of participation in representing UCC at specific
activities during the academic year.
The Millennium Incourse Scholarship, created by the federal
government to provide opportunities for Canadians to learn, grow, and
contribute to their communities, requires students to excel in four
areas: academic achievement, community service, leadership, and
innovation. The Millennium Scholarships were created in three tiers
and are adjudicated in-house before being forwarded to a federal
committee for final approval. Three UCC students qualified for
third-level scholarships, a one-time award of $4000, while a fourth
student qualified for a second-level scholarship, worth $4000 a year
for two years.

KAMLOOPS-An information meeting for a third cohort of nursing
professionals interested in enrolling in a UBC Master of Science in
Nursing program in the BC Interior will be held at UCC February 3rd.
Prospective participants may choose between two one-and-a-half-hour
sessions: 9:15 am in room 375 of the UCC Science Building, or 2:30 pm
in room 2651 in the Old Main Building.
Scheduled to begin in September 2005, the program is again being
offered in response to a continuing need for nursing education
development, for which the BC Government has announced additional
funding to help prepare nurse educators at the master's level. This
does not exclude those who, in addition to an education focus, also
want to incorporate course work that focuses on a clinical area.
Students are slated to graduate in May 2007, after two years of
part-time study.*
"The focus of the UCC cohort is on creating the opportunity for
graduate-level study for nurses living outside the lower mainland,
with all classes to be held at UCC's Kamloops campus or on the net,"
explained UCC Nursing instructor Sharon Simpson, who explained that
preference for acceptance into the program will be given to applicants
who live in the Interior Health region.
In addition to the five core MSN courses, the program will focus on
educational processes in nursing, including curriculum design and
content, as well as experience related to teaching in several
contexts, plus course work in a clinical context.*
