Academic Integrity and GenAI
The Writing Centre supports students’ understanding of how to follow Academic Integrity policies at TRU, including things like academic writing, citation styles, and how to responsibly use generative Artificial Intelligence tools to support (but not replace) your learning.
The Writing Centre actively works to increase awareness of the ethical and academic integrity implications of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools. Tutors are trained to identify possible GenAI use and teach students the process for transparently documenting and appropriately citing GenAI in their academic work.
Currently, the decision to allow GenAI tools in students’ academic work is at the discretion of their instructor; therefore, students must have explicit permission from their instructors to use AI in their academic work.
If permission is granted, the best practice for integrating AI in your academic work is to document and cite AI use.
- Document: you need to include acknowledgement of the GenAI tool used and for what purpose, the prompts used to generate content, and a note about the modifications.
- Cite: (in-text and bibliographic)
- Our APA, Chicago, and MLA guides have been updated to include in-text and bibliographic examples.
- Include the original output with the submission (usually in an appendix).
Information Sessions on Understanding Academic Integrity and Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence
Students interested in learning more about Academic Integrity at TRU and how to responsibly use Artificial Intelligence in an academic context can book an appointment for an Information Session with a TRU Writing Centre tutor. Info session appointments can only be done in-person or online via synchronous video call.
We offer two different info sessions: one on Understanding Academic Integrity and one on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence.
In our “Understanding Academic Integrity Info Session” appointments, tutors review key terms from our Academic Integrity Policy ED 05-0, explain the differences between plagiarism and fabrication, explore what constitutes common knowledge, discuss student and faculty rights and responsibilities, and provide resources and supports.
In our “Responsible Use of AI Info Session” appointments, tutors help students familiarize themselves with the policies and guidelines regarding AI use at TRU, understand what “responsible” use of GenAI means, discuss the ethical concerns and limitations of AI tools, and explore resources and tools that support understanding and using AI tools for writing and research.
