What to expect
The Writing Centre supports all undergraduate, graduate, on-campus, and online students. We are committed to offering individualized, local, human, peer-led writing support that reflects the “demographic, ethnic, linguistic, and disciplinary diversity of the student population” (CWCA/ACCR Statement on corporate, automated, online tutoring tools, 2022). While we believe that writing is thinking, we support responsible, informed, critical, transparent use of GenAI.
About our tutors
Tutors at the Writing Centre come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines across both undergraduate and graduate level programs.
Tutors are trained to:
- listen carefully and ask questions
- highlight strengths
- encourage students to build their writing skills by providing suggestions, explanations, examples, and resources
- avoid "editing" or "correcting" an entire paper
- apply an anti-colonial and anti-racist lens on “academic writing”
- advise on the responsible use of AI tools.
Tutors do not:
- judge
- use AI tools to evaluate your work
- rewrite AI-generated writing to “sound human”
- grade or speculate on a grade for an assignment
- tutor discipline- or course-specific content
- provide feedback on take-home exams unless we have explicit, written permission from the instructor
- review student work outside of appointment times
