Program Overview

Wildfires are an increasingly urgent challenge worldwide, driven by changes in climate and land use. Thompson Rivers University invites learners to tackle this critical issue through its Wildfire Science Certificate program. This certificate offers an interdisciplinary approach that combines academic research with practical skills, preparing graduates to effectively assess wildfire challenges.

TRU leads in wildfire resilience education by integrating hands-on learning with cutting-edge research and industry partnerships. Students also learn from leading fire scientists, including Dr. Mike Flannigan, whose groundbreaking work in fire behavior and climate impacts is used across Canada and directly supports BC Wildfire Service’s predictive services. This scientific foundation deepens students’ understanding of fire regimes, fuels, and fire-weather interactions, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to create real-world solutions, strengthen community resilience, and address the growing impact of wildfires locally and globally.

This program is designed for diverse learners interested in wildfire and environmental dynamics, including students pursuing meaningful careers, professionals advancing their expertise, and community leaders building resilience in their regions. With a focus on empowering individuals to drive change, the Wildfire Science Certificate equips graduates to make a lasting impact in wildfire management and recovery.
