Diploma in Wildfire Studies

Highlights

This program prepares students for a range of introductory roles in the fields of Wildfire studies, management, leadership, communications and media relations, as well as offering a grounded understanding and foundation in various Indigenous cultural wildfire and land-based practices. By critically examining wildfires through an emphasis on socio-economic, colonial, political, geographical inequities, the impact of wildfires are understood to impact individuals, cultures, and communities disproportionately. The Diploma in Wildfire Studies is a two-year interdisciplinary program, which consists of four 9 credit certificates and 24 general education credits. The four certificates are embedded in the four semesters in the first and second years of the program and consists of the Wildfire Science Certificate, the Sociocultural Dynamics of Fire Certificate, the Wildfire Leadership Certificate, and the Wildfire Communications and Media Certificate. Additionally, the diploma offers a laddering opportunity into a Degree, the Bachelor of Arts in Wildfire Studies.

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 (or equivalent) or mature student status
  • English Studies 12/English First Peoples 12 with a minimum of 73% (or equivalent)
