Dr. Brett Fairbairn, President Emeritus
Dr. Brett Fairbairn served as president and vice-chancellor of Thompson Rivers University from 2018 to 2025, guiding the university with a strong commitment to community engagement, open access and the transformative power of education. During his tenure, he led TRU through the pandemic while advancing research, innovation and student support. Fairbairn launched Envision TRU and helped place the Secwépemc value of Kw’seltktnéws at the centre of the university’s 2020–2030 vision, strengthening reconciliation and institutional identity. He also championed research growth, health-care education and international partnerships. Fairbairn’s values-driven leadership strengthened TRU’s reputation, community connections and vision for the future.
Dr. Belayet Hossain, Professor Emeritus
Dr. Belayet Hossain joined TRU’s Economics department in the Bob Gaglardi School of Business and Economics in 2005 and has demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship and service throughout his academic career. Recognized with the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, he has taught and mentored students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including supervising numerous student research projects and theses. Hossain has maintained an active research program, publishing widely in respected international journals and contributing to policy discussions nationally and internationally. His leadership at TRU and abroad leaves a lasting impact, enriching the university community and enhancing TRU’s academic reputation.
Dr. George Johnson, Professor Emeritus
Dr. George Johnson has been an inspiring educator, mentor and leader in TRU’s Faculty of Arts since 1991. He played a key role in revising the English major and establishing the Creative Writing program and the BA in Applied Creative Arts. As department chair for seven years he led with empathy, inclusivity and a deep commitment to student and faculty success. His scholarship and creative work have brought international attention to social justice and environmental issues. Johnson has won multiple awards as an author, playwright and screenwriter, most recently for music video Climate Crisis, and received the YMCA Peace Medal in 2019.
Heather Shannon, Educator Emerita
Heather Shannon taught in TRU’s Animal Health Technology department and served for six years as department chair. A respected educator and registered veterinary technologist, she is recognized for her creativity, leadership, positivity and commitment to student success. She played a central role in revitalizing the Veterinary Technology program, including developing the successful Open Learning stream, modernizing curriculum and enhancing hands-on learning opportunities. Through service with provincial and national organizations, Shannon’s leadership in veterinary technology has advanced professional standards, inclusion and accreditation. Her national leadership, industry connections and dedication to community-building have strengthened both TRU and the veterinary technology profession across Canada.
