TRU Study Abroad Ambassador Awards

Due to the pandemic, the Study Abroad Ambassador program continues to be suspended and no applications are currently being accepted.

A limited number of competitive awards of $2,000 each are available for students who have returned from a TRU approved Study Abroad program at either a bilateral or ISEP partner institution. Ambassadors represent the Study Abroad program and assist Study Abroad staff in the promotion of its value.

Study Abroad Ambassador Award

Successful applicants will have the value of their award credited to their tuition account on a semesterized basis.

Ambassador duties

  • Promoting Study Abroad through outreach activities such as class visits, information sessions, and peer-to-peer support
  • Working with the Study Abroad staff and marketing co-ordinator to develop marketing tools including social media, banners, posters, flyers, and literature
  • Providing information and guidance to interested students and other relevant parties at booths around campus, class visits, desk hours, and other campus and community events
  • Planning and attending Study Abroad events
  • Completing a larger project that benefits and gives back to the Study Abroad program
  • Being part of a smaller Ambassador sub-group that concentrates on a specific objective (i.e. event planning, Study Abroad promotions, presentations, or administrative duties)
  • Attending regular meetings
  • Acting as a point of contact for incoming exchange students
  • Contributing to the development of the Study Abroad Ambassador program by completing surveys and evaluations

Education/experience

  • Must be intending to enrol full-time (minimum nine undergraduate credits per semester) at TRU in an undergraduate program for both fall and winter semesters
  • Must have successfully completed a one or two semester Study Abroad approved program at a partner institution in another country
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average at TRU of 2.50
  • Must have a positive record in applying for Study Abroad, including reports and correspondence from the student’s host university

Qualifications

  • Able to commit to 8-10 hours/week in both fall and winter semesters
  • A desire to work with other students, groups on campus, and the community
  • An enthusiasm for sharing the Study Abroad experience
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, written, and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, in small groups, or in a team environment
  • Leadership experience and a positive attitude
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, internet, and social media
  • Project management skills such as organization, attention to detail and event planning
  • Conflict resolution and problem solving abilities

Applicants must

  • Submit the TRU Study Abroad Ambassador application including a written statement of 500 to 1000 words that covers three key concepts: (1) the impact of Study Abroad on the student’s life, (2) why the student feels they are suited to be a Study Abroad Ambassador, and (3) a plan or list of ideas describing what the student will do to promote the concept, benefits, and opportunities available through Study Abroad
  • Attend a three-day ambassador training event scheduled for August (if selected)
  • Submit a creative piece to illustrate the TRU study abroad experience. The student is invited to choose from a variety of platforms such as: video, Prezi, PowerPoint, photo montage, WordArt,or any other social media tool to share this experience.   • The award will be applied as a tuition credit of $1000 in August, with the remaining $1000 applied as a tuition credit in January.
