Do you have both face-to-face and online tutoring appointments available?
Yes. However, online tutoring appointments are only available for students enrolled in an online (OL) course. (Suggestion! Hyperlink “online appointments” to our web page.)
Can I contact a tutor with a question outside of my appointment?
Feedback from a tutor is limited to the time that you are scheduled for an appointment. However, if you need a private tutor, please contact the Writing Centre with your name, email, phone number, and the course you need help with.
What if I need help with my writing and the WC is closed?
After-hours appointments are available at “satellite” locations on campus: TRU Residence, McGill Housing, House of Learning, Cplul’kw’ten, and Graduate Commons. Starting Fall 2019, we will also have appointments available on Saturdays.
What if I need help and you’re all booked up?
In the fall and winter semesters, we usually have two (or three) appointments available each day on a first-come, first-served basis. Please check the schedule for drop-in appointment times. Additionally, we also offer standby service if a student is a no-show (or leaves early) for their scheduled appointment. You can also join a waitlist to be notified by email of any cancelled appointments.
When do you reply to emails?
We answer emails (and voice mail messages) Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 2:30pm during the fall and winter semesters, and Monday to Thursday, 10am to 2pm, during the summer semester.
Can I get help with take-home exams?
In most cases, no. Unless you have written authorization from your instructor that the Writing Centre can help you with a take-home exam, the tutor will not be able to give you feedback.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Always bring a copy of your assignment instructions. If you have a first draft of your written assignment, please bring a printed copy. However, some tutors are willing to review your work on a computer screen.
Can I make an appointment for a group project?
If you will receive a shared mark for a group project, the tutor can meet with all the members of your group at the same time. Each member of the group can make two (or three) appointments per week.
Can I have an appointment that’s longer than 30 minutes?
To serve as many students as possible, we limit appointments to two (or three), 30-minute appointments per week. However, if there is an available time slot immediately following your appointment, you can extend your appointment to a maximum one hour per day.
What happens if I forget to come for an appointment?
If you don’t show up for one appointment, you will be unable to make an appointment for one week. If you have two no-show appointments, your account will be disabled for two weeks. However, you are still welcome to come to the Writing Centre, and if a tutor has an available appointment, they can help you.
How can I get help with something specific, like APA?
Our tutors can help you with any general academic writing question. However, if you are looking for help with a specific topic, please check the “Meet the Tutor” page to find out tutor specialties, like APA.
