Medical Plan for Adventure Studies Students

If you are registered in Adventure Sport Certificate, Adventure Management Diploma and Adventure Guide Diploma, or Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Adventure and you have a field course in the Fall semester, you need the extra medical insurance for the first three months.

Ensuring that you have adequate medical insurance is your responsibility but TRU World aims to assist you in arranging insurance that adequately covers the high-risk activities that you may be engaged in as part of your program. BC residents, including International students, are eligible for Medical Service Plan (BC Government Medical Insurance) effective from the first day of the fourth month after arrival in BC.

Until then, all international students must have medical insurance to cover them for any medical expenses. TRU World has purchased private medical insurance coverage on behalf of most of the new international students through guard.me until MSP coverage starts. However, for students in Adventure Sport Certificate, Adventure Management Diploma, Adventure Guide Diploma or Bachelor of Tourism Management, Adventure Studies Program, guard.me insurance coverage is inadequate because it specifically excludes some high-risk activities. You must purchase other private medical insurance to cover the high-risk activities until MSP kicks in.

We have looked into your insurance needs and according to BCAA, their policy “Visitors to Canada” may be a good option if you have not yet purchased any other medical insurance that covers high risk activities.

We recommend the following:

If you do NOT currently have insurance:

  • Visit BCAA, located in the Columbia Place Shopping Centre (on the corner behind Save-On-Foods) and purchase insurance (be sure to mention the activities you will be doing)
  • Opt-out the guard.me medical insurance purchase here so you don’t get double charged for insurance before the opt-out deadline.
  • Bring your BCAA Medical Insurance Contract to your ISA (TRU World, 3rd Floor International Building) so we have a copy on file.
  • See your ISA to help you apply for the MSP (BC Government Medical Insurance) if you haven’t done so yet.

If you already have insurance:

  • Bring your Insurance Contract to your ISA so we have a copy on file.
  • Opt-out the guard.me medical insurance purchase here so you don’t get double charged for insurance before the opt-out deadline.
  • Please visit your ISA to help you apply for the MSP (BC Government Medical Insurance) if you haven’t done so yet.
