How to Apply for BTM
These requirements apply to the Bachelor of Tourism Management and diploma programs (excluding post-baccalaureate).
High school graduation
- BC Grade 12 or equivalent or mature student status.
- English 12/English 12 First Peoples with 73 percent or better within the last five years
- or completion of English 0600 (University level English 12 equivalent)
- or Language Proficiency Index (LPI) with a Level 4 or better within the last two years
- or completion of English as a Second or Additional Language (ESAL) ESAL 0570 and ESAL 0580 with a minimum grade of C+ in both
- or equivalent
BC high school graduates prior to 2013
- BC Math 11 – Principles (C minimum)
- or BC Math 12 – Applications
- or MATH 0510 (C minimum)
- or equivalent
Students who complete BC Math 11 – Principles or BC Math 12 - Applications prior to 2013 are not required to upgrade to the new Foundations math, so long as they met the minimum grade requirement.
Students with BC Math 12 – Principles (C+ minimum) will be exempt from Finite Math (MATH 1100) and must make up the credits with an elective of their choice.
BC high school graduates of 2013 onwards
- BC Math 11 – Foundations (C minimum)
- or BC Math 11 – Pre-calculus (C minimum)
- or MATH 0510 (TRU University Prep)
- or MATH 0523 (Open Learning)
- or equivalent
Students with Math 12 - Foundations (C+ minimum) will be exempt from Finite Math (MATH 1100) and must make up the credits with an elective of their choice.
Students with little or no experience using computers are advised to take an introductory computer course that familiarizes them with Microsoft application software.
- Official transcripts of all previous secondary and post-secondary educational records.
- Proof of citizenship, landed immigrant status, or valid student visa, if not born in Canada.
- A detailed resumé outlining educational accomplishments and credentials, work and volunteer experience, and personal interests and activities.
- If requesting exemption from the field work requirements, submit three letters of reference confirming the nature, length, and quality of your work experience.
- Fall semester admission: Oct. 1 to April 15.
- Winter semester admission: Nov. 1 to Nov. 30.
- Late applications are considered if space is available.
International students: fees and deadlines
If you were accepted or applied but did not attend last year, you must submit a new application form and contact Admissions to ensure that all required documentation is still on file and complete.
Should the number of qualified applicants exceed the spaces available, a selective admissions process will be used to determine admission to the BTM program. Applicants will be required to attend an interview. All interviewees will be asked the same questions. Candidates will be ranked on communication skills, motivation, understanding, and commitment to the program and this field of study.
Field work requirement
In order to meet all requirements for graduation, students must have a minimum of 500 hours of documented, relevant work experience supported by industry references indicating capable performance. If this requirement is not met upon admission, it will have to be completed prior to the final year of study.
Students have the option of completing two four-month Co-op work terms as part of their studies in the Bachelor of Tourism Management. Co-operative education is the integration of academic studies with paid work terms. There is a charge for each Co-op term. Orientations to familiarize students with the Co-op option are held in September.
Exemptions and transfer credit
Applicants who have previous credits in appropriate university or college courses may apply them toward the requirements of the program. A maximum of 50 percent of the program credit requirements can be fulfilled by transfer credit. Please refer to TRU Policy ED 2-4 for more information about the Transfer Credit process.
