The purpose of exposure control is to eliminate or minimize the risk of exposure or transmission of COVID-19.
Hierarchy of controls
In developing your safety plan, always select safety protocols that offer the highest level of protection first before adding other control measures. Note: the use of PPE (personal protective equipment) is not a substitute for physical distancing. It should only be considered where physical distancing cannot be maintained and where you have already considered and implemented engineering and administrative controls.
First level of protection (elimination):
Keep people at a safe physical distance from one another. Limit the number of people in your institution's facilities at any one time and implement protocols to keep faculty, staff and students at least two metres from each other, and from members of the public.
Second level protection (engineering controls):
If you can't always maintain physical distancing, install barriers such as Plexiglas to separate people.
Third level protection (administrative controls):
Establish rules and guidelines, such as cleaning protocols, telling faculty, staff and students to not share tools, or implementing one-way doors or walkways.
Fourth level protection (PPE):
If the first three levels of protection aren't enough to control the risk, consider the use of non-medical masks. Be aware of the limitation of non-medical masks to protect the wearer from respiratory droplets. Ensure faculty, staff and students are using masks appropriately. Note that appropriate PPE, including medical grade PPE, will be mandatory in certain post-secondary settings (e.g. clinical settings, laboratories).
