Applied Computer Skills • XPCS 0760

Designed for students with very little experience using computers, this 60-hour course is divided into three sections: Basic Computer Use and Windows 10 Operating System, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. The course focus will be applied skills, not solely computer knowledge.

In the Basic Computer Use section, you will learn how to:

  • Properly turn on and turn off the computer
  • Navigate through the Windows operating system
  • Use the file management system
  • Browse the internet
  • Use basic typing skills
  • Accomplish basic email tasks

At the end of this section, you will have the competencies necessary to confidently use a computer for common tasks.

In the Microsoft Word section, you will:

  • Learn navigation in Microsoft Office and other programs
  • Understand common functions available in Word
  • Use basic formatting techniques
  • create a basic resume and cover letter

In the Microsoft Excel seciton, you will learn the basics of spreadsheet creation, understand the pupose and use of basic functions, explore basic graphing capabilities and be able to comfortably create a basic budgeting worksheet.

A TRU Certificate of Completion will be issued for successfully completing the course.

Introduction to Office 2010 • XPCS 0720

This course introduces you to three Microsoft Office 2010 system applications. You will learn about the results-oriented interface of this software and the tools available to create, finalize and ensure professional looking documents. This course will provide step-by-step instruction through the basics of each application.

Introduction to Excel 2010 Level 1 • XPCS 0062

This course is designed for students wishing to gain a basic understanding of the spreadsheet as a management decision-making tool. Microsoft Excel 2010 for Windows will be the spreadsheet program demonstrated and used by students. The course will concentrate on the concepts of spreadsheets including design, analysis and graphs.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Windows

Introduction to PowerPoint 2010 Level 1 • XPCS 0082

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 Level 1 teaches students how to create presentations using a variety of commands and functions. This course is designed for computer users who are new to presentation manager programs or who only plan to use PowerPoint occasionally.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with personal computers, using a keyboard and mouse. The course assumes students have a solid Windows background.

Introduction to Word 2010 Level 1  • XPCS 0080

Microsoft Office Word 2010 Level 1 teaches students how to:

  • create and edit documents,
  • save, open or close documents
  • apply formatting options
  • set tabs and indents
  • change the view mode
  • manipulate the text using features such as copy and paste
  • preview, and then print the document

This course is designed for people who desire the skills necessary to create, edit, format, and print basic Microsoft Office Word 2010 documents.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with personal computers using a keyboard and mouse. This course assumes that students have completed the Microsoft Windows Level 1 course or have equivalent Microsoft Windows knowledge and experience.
