Hazardous Waste Disposal

The Health and Safety Department is responsible for determining the proper disposal procedures for all hazardous waste. No TRU employee or student shall dispose of any potentially hazardous or toxic materials without first consulting with the Health and Safety Department.

Requests for hazardous waste disposal can be made using:

Waste types acceptable for disposal

Wastes that would fall into the category of "hazardous wastes" are listed below. However, this is not an all inclusive list and if you have waste substances which you are unsure about, please contact our office (5139 or 5805).

  • Phenolic Compounds
  • Oil and Grease
  • Coumpounds containing, or pure souces of, cyanide, copper, chromium, nickel, lead, zinc, cadmium, phosphorous, mercury
  • Flammable and/or Explosive Materials
  • Halogenated Hydrocarbons, such as Carbon Tetrachloride, 1,1,1 Trichloroethane or Freon products
  • Halogens (bromine, Chlorine, Fluorine, Iodine)
  • Compressed Gas Cylinders
  • Armine Compounds
  • Photographic Developers
  • Organic and Inorganic Solvents, including Formaldehyde - contact the OH&S office for information regarding the disposal of preserved specimens

Waste types not acceptable for cisposal

Items that cannot be included in TRU managed hazardous waste collections are:

  • Household wastes
  • Biohazard (infectious waste)
  • Radioactive waste
  • Photocopier or laser printer toner cartridges
  • Preserved specimens (see above - Item "10")

Frequency of disposal / pick-up

The H&S Department coordinates the disposal of hazardous waste substances that are generated on campus on an annual basis.

Waste destined for disposal can be collected at any time throughout the year by a member of the H&S Department. Contact H&S to arrange for pick-up.

Suitable containers

Waste materials which are destined for disposal should be placed in containers that meet all of the following criteria:

  1. leak proof
  2. have a tight fitting lid or cap
  3. are clearly marked as waste for disposal
  4. are labelled with the contents of the container

Partially filled containers of the same product, should be consolidated to reduce disposal costs.

The container cannot be returned so do not put the waste in any container that you may want to keep.
