Term | Definition |

Accident | An unplanned interruption of an orderly process involving the motion of people, objects or substances, which may or may not involve injury or property damage. Also includes a wilful and intentional act, not being the act of the worker, and also includes a fortuitous event occasioned by a physical or natural cause. |
Accountability | Any means of ensuring that the person who is supposed to do a task actually performs it and does so correctly. |
Authority | The right to decide, to direct others to take action, or to perform certain duties in achieving organizational goals. |
Chairperson | Refers to the middle management individual who administers resources and supervises individuals within a component part of an instructional Division. |
Contractor | Means a person not in the direct employ of TRU. In the case of a company, refers to a firm which is independently registered with the BC Registrar of Companies and who has been hired to person a specific function or work activity. May include consultants. |
Dean | Refers to the upper management individual who is responsible for the administration of an instructional division. |
Director | Refers to the upper management individual who is responsible for the administration of a support services division. |
Due Diligence | Is a term that refers to an individual in a position of responsibility taking all reasonable care in the exercise of his or her duties (see section 2). |
Employer | Includes every person having in his/her service under a contract of hiring or apprenticeship, written or oral, expressed or implied, a person engaged in work in or about an industry (WCB, 1980). |
Executive | Refers to the senior management of TRU, specifically the President and two Vice- Presidents. |
Instructor | Refers to a person who instructs or otherwise delivers educational materials and information to students within specific courses. |
Lab Demonstrator | Refers to those people who are responsible for overseeing the "lab" components of courses and instructs or otherwise delivers educational materials and information to students. |
Manager | Refers to the individual who is responsible for the administration of a department or specific service component within a division. |
Officer | An individual with responsibility for a specific area of expertise (i.e. Budget Officer). |
Management | Is the process of getting things done through the efforts of other people. |
Responsibility | Is an obligation to perform work activities. |
Student | A person registered in a course of instruction at TRU, either full or part-time. |
Supervisor | Refers to a person who instructs, directs or controls persons in the safe performance of their duties. |
Worker | Includes, but is not limited to:
(a) a person who has entered into or works under a contract of services or apprenticeship, written or oral, express or implied, whether by way of manual labour or otherwise; (b) a person who is a learner, although not under a contract of service or apprenticeship, who becomes subject to the hazards of an industry within the scope of the Workers' Compensation Act for the purpose of undergoing training or probationary work specified or stipulated by the employer as a preliminary to employment; |
