Teaching English as a Second Language
Launch your career! Get the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to start your career Teaching English as a Second Language in Canada or internationally. TRU TESL graduates explore the world, collect unforgettable experiences, and find themselves in high demand. The TRU TESL program is nationally accredited by TESL Canada.
Why the TRU TESL program?
- Very high success rate in job placement on graduation, including numerous graduates who get their start teaching in contract training programs at TRU.
- Accredited program and graduates receive both a TRU TESL Certificate and are eligible to apply for TESL Canada Level 1 (Interim) certificate (The vast majority of jobs in Canada — and overseas — require Level 1 so it opens a lot of doors.).
- Unlike short programs from various private providers that do not include a practicum, students complete a supervised practicum in the TRU TESL program — qualifying and readying them to teach both in Canada and internationally.
- Mentorship opportunity in the TESL practicum teaching ESL students at TRU or in another institution/organization.
The TESL program is a 15-credit post-baccalaureate program that can be completed in one semester full-time or done part-time over multiple semesters. It provides you with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience in the class you need to teach English as a second or foreign language. The five courses offer a balance of theoretical and practical knowledge. The 20-hour practicum lets students apply what they’re learning to real classes under the individual mentorship of a professional ESL teacher.
In the program, students learn effective lesson planning, and understanding of the key principles in language teaching, effective techniques for teaching speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
