We support faculty in improving scholarly teaching practices or developing and conducting research projects investigating student learning in their classes.
Scholarly teachers improve through feedback on, and reflections about their own teaching. They become familiar with the scholarly research investigating pedagogical approaches and methods of fostering and evaluating student learning in their fields. Our staff can assist with locating relevant literature and developing plans to integrate this knowledge into teaching practices.
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is the systematic scholarly inquiry into student learning. It is aimed at understanding how teaching can maximize student learning in research studies where results are public shared for critique with the goal of advancing the practices of teaching that are demonstrated to enhance learning. Those engaged in SoTL develop a systematic and scholarly approach to investigating a teaching problem. Research questions are framed with a focus on student learning and the goal of improving teaching practice in one’s own learning environment. Instructors systematically gather and explore evidence, reflect on and refine new ideas, and summarize the results in a form that is suitable for peer review and public dissemination. Our staff can assist with all aspects of developing, conducting, and disseminating SoTL research.
