Career Works - Summer Student Wage Subsidy
TRU Career and Experiential Learning in partnership with the TRU Student's Union is pleased to offer in response to the COVID-19 crises, a wage subsidy to help support TRU students with summer employment. The Career Work Subsidy will provide up to $4000 in wage subsidies per Thompson Rivers University student. Career Works has opened eligibility to:
- Not for Profit organizations
- Small and Medium sized BC business-less than 100 employees
- Maximum of two Career Works Wage Subsidy per organization
- An eligible employer must be willing to provide a positive work environment to a TRU student for a minimum of 8 weeks
- The Career Works Wage Subsidy will be calculated based on 50% of a student’s wages, to a maximum subsidy of $4000 per student hire
- The Career Works Wage Subsidy cannot stacked with other provincial or federal wage subsidy programs
Student Criteria
- Must be a current full-time student at TRU-Returning to TRU in Fall 2020 semester
- Subsidy is available for both domestic and international students
- Must be able to legally work in Canada
- Currently not employed full-time
Employer Criteria
- Students must be a current Thompson Rivers University Student, returning to full time studies in the Fall of 2020
- Jobs must be a min of 30 hrs per week of employment
- Jobs must be for minimum of 8 weeks
- Students must be paid a minimum of $14.60 (BC minimum wage as of June 1, 2020)
- You are a registered Canadian business or organization
- You are a registered non-profit
- You are not a Public Sector employer
- You have the financially ability to hire a student from Thompson Rivers University
- Provide a safe work environment that complies with BC Health COVID-19 workplace policies and WCB standards
- To receive the subsidy the student must have remained employed for the length of the agreed upon term (for example if a student is terminated prior to the end of the agreed upon term of employment, the organization will not receive any remaining subsidy funds)
Receiving Career Works Wage Subsidy
Administrative
- Organizations will receive the wage subsidy within two weeks following the last day of the position-provided we have received all required documents, employment and salary verification
- The Career Works Wage Subsidy will be paid in two installments. The first installment at the half way point in the experience. The second installment at the completion of the work experience
- Completion of Appendix C must be submitted with subsidy invoice remittance to receive subsidy payment
- The Career Works Wage Subsidy will be calculated based on 50% of a student’s wages, to a maximum subsidy of $4000 per student hire
To start the process
- Complete the Career Works Wage Subsidy application form
- Your application will be evaluated and you will be contacted by a the TRU CEL Department within a week of application receipt
- Once the application is approved-your position will be posted on the TRU Career Connections Website
- TRU students will apply directly to your posting
- In order to receive the subsidy, once you have hired a TRU Student-contact the Career Works Wage Subsidy “person” to verify employment and complete the subsidy process
