Information for Faculty & Staff
It is assumed that students enroll at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) out of an interest in furthering their education. Accordingly, it is expected that students will conduct themselves towards University staff, fellow students and members of the University community in a manner consistent with the goals and professional demeanor of an educational institution.
Thompson Rivers University students are required to comply with the standards of academic integrity set out in the Student Academic Integrity (ED 5-0) Policy.
It is the responsibility of Thompson Rivers University faculty and staff to take reasonable steps to prevent and to detect acts of academic dishonesty. It is an instructor's responsibility to confront a student when such an act is suspected and to take appropriate action if academic dishonesty, in the opinion of the instructor, has occurred. The goal of this process is to ensure that the student learns from the experience, so that he or she can continue without further offences during his or her tenure at TRU.
The Academic Integrity Committee, a standing commitee of the Thompson Rivers University Senate, oversees the academjc integrity process of the institution. The commitee has developed guidelines and resources to assist faculty in their submission of an infraction of the Student Academic Integrity Policy. As a member of the Thompson Rivers University community, faculty and staff are often one of the first individuals to notice a student exhibiting concerning, distressing or threatening behaviours. A student does not need to be violating any University rules or regulations for you to be concerned.
Student Services, within the Faculty of Student Development, produces an annual TRU Guide to Supporting Students and is able to provide resources and training at a Faculty Council and/or departmental meetings. The Suggested Procedures for Dealing With At-Risk Students, TRU Policy ADM 17-0 provides an overview of procedures that should be followed in supporting students.

Referrals & Reporting Student Behaviours
Anyone in the campus community who has concerns for a student in difficulty can contact Early Alert. Early Alert engages faculty and staff in identifying students in difficulty and connects those students to TRU resources and support services as efficiently as possible.
TRU offers a variety of services and supports for students, such as counselling, disability services and the wellness centre. Visit Student Services to learn more about the services available. To refer a student, please contact 250-828-5023 or stop by Old Main 1631.
Anyone in the campus community observing an incident of a violation of an institutional policy or regulation should contact the Office of Student Affairs at 250-828-5023.
Anyone in the campus community observing an incident of: behavior threatening to others, property damage, disruption to campus activities, or other violations of the law, should contact Campus Security Services at 250-828-5033.
Individuals may also refer the matter to Student Services at 250-828-5023.
Behaviour Intervention Team
The Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) is a collaborative interdisciplinary team of campus members that meets weekly to identify ways in which to proactively support students exhibiting disruptive behaviours.
BIT’s primary function is to support the safety of the university community and connect distressed and distressing students to available support services. BIT is located within the Faculty of Student Development and consists of a team of professionals from several university units including Student Affairs, Residences, International Student Services, Disability Services, Counselling, Campus Security, and Risk Management.
