Categories and Points

Global Competency is a credential that can be earned in tandem with any credit program (undergraduate or graduate) offered by Thompson Rivers University. The credential recognizes the global literacy (knowledge, skills and attitudes/values) acquired by students through their educational experience at TRU and offers them the opportunity of earning a valuable supplementary credential.

Global Competency   MANDATORY completion requirements
Points earned P Students must earn a minimum of 12 points in TWO or more categories (A, B, C, D) in order to qualify for program completion.
EACH experience/activity can only be used for points in ONE Category.
Presentation, poster session or publication;
AND
P Presentation or poster session at an orientation session, workshop, conference or other event - for example: TRU International Days, TRU Undergraduate Student Research Conference, TRU Teaching Practices Colloquium, etc.; or publication of an article about the student's International/Intercultural experience.
Portfolio documenting the student activities and experience P Students will document their Global Competency activities in a portfolio that will be used to validate the completion of program requirements.

Category A

Additional language   A language that is additional to student's FIRST language.
Students will earn 5 points for the FIRST additional language.
The weight of subsequent languages will be discounted by 50% - For example, a SECOND additional language will earn 2.5 points (50% value); a THIRD additional language will earn 1.25 points (25%); etc.
1. Academic (course work) 12 credits in ONE language; or 5 ANY TRU credit language course offered by the Modern Languages Department, ESAL, and TRU-OL (please refer to the current TRU and TRU-OL calendars for a complete listing)
2. Proficiency (via proficiency test, PLAR, or validated by other means) 5

Category B

International experience (abroad)   Students will earn the full points value for the FIRST international experience.
The weight of subsequent SIMILAR experiences will be discounted by 50% - For example, a SECOND study abroad semester will earn 2.5 points (50% value); a THIRD study abroad semester will earn 1.25 points (25%).
Students can complete two or more DIFFERENT international experiences and earn the full points value for each - For example, a first study abroad semester (5 points) and a TRU International Field School experience (3 points).

3. TRU International Field Course

TRU International Field trip – not for credit (documented by student with external validation) 2 International field trips that may or may not be associated to a particular class. For example: attending an international conference related to a program of study, competing in an international case competition or conducting field research for a special project.

Experience in Canada with an Intercultural or International focus completed via TRU   Students will earn the full point value for the FIRST course, volunteer or employment experience with an international or intercultural focus offered by TRU in Canada.
The weight of subsequent SIMILAR experiences will be discounted by 50% - For example, a SECOND course will earn 1 point (50% value); a THIRD course will earn 0.5 points (25%).
1. Credit course offered by TRU 2 A TRU and TRU-OL credit course that has an international or intercultural focus (please refer to attached list of courses).
2. Service Learning Course offered by TRU 2 A TRU and TRU-OL service learning course that has an international or intercultural focus.
3. Volunteer or Employment for TRU (documented by student with external validation) 2 Volunteer or work experience at TRU with an international/intercultural focus.
15 hours or more is required.

Experience in Canada with an Intercultural or international focus completed via an organization external to TRU   Students will earn the full point value for the FIRST course, volunteer or employment experience with an international or intercultural focus offered by an organization other than TRU in Canada.
The weight of subsequent SIMILAR experiences will be discounted by 50% - For example, a SECOND course will earn 1 point (50% value); a THIRD course will earn 0.5 points (25%).
1. Credit course completed at another post-secondary institution in Canada 2 A credit course offered by another post-secondary institution (eligible for transfer credit at TRU) that has an international or intercultural focus.
2. Service Learning Course offered by another post-secondary institution in Canada 2 A service learning course offered by an organization other than TRU with an international or intercultural focus.
3. Volunteer or Employment in Canada (documented by student with external validation) 2 Volunteer or work experience with a international/interculutral focus

For example: volunteer or work experience with Kamloops Immigrant Services

15 hours or more is required.
