Admission Information
Program Description
This is a baccalaureate program that provides a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to write the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE) and apply for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN). The program also provides Diploma prepared Registered Nurses with an opportunity to complete a baccalaureate degree. Admission to the program is contingent upon availability of seats and your ranking in the Selective Admissions process.

Admission Requirements-Year 1
Educational Requirements*
- BC Grade 12 or equivalent or Mature Student Status**
- One BC Science 11 or 12; C+ minimum grade. (Biology 11 recommended)
- BC Chemistry 11 or TRU Chemistry 050 or equivalent; C+ minimum grade
- BC Math 11(Principles) or TRU Math 050 & 051 or equivalent; C minimum grade
- BC Biology 12 or TRU Biology 060 or equivalent; C+ minimum grade
- BC English 12 or TRU English 060 or equivalent or LPI - Level 4 within the last two years; B minimum grade
* Grades must be current within the past 10 years
** Mature students are required to meet the Science, Math and English prerequisites. Mature students who have recently completed BIOL 159/169 or equivalents with a minimum C grade may have the Science prerequisites waived.
Language Proficiency Index Exam
(LPI) Test score is valid for admission only if it has been written within the last 2 years. If your test was written over 2 years ago you must re-write. For scheduled testing sessions, students must register to write through UBC-ARES. Information/registration pamphlets can be picked up at the Assessment Centre, Room OM1762 or by contacting (250) 828-5470. The fee is $99.00 + HST (subject to change). It is your responsibility to supply a copy of the Language Proficiency Index results to Admissions.
Other Document Requirements
- Letter of Introduction: A letter of introduction may include a brief personal history (academic, employment and /or community service), the reason(s) for choosing nursing, the qualities that you would bring into the nursing program, personal expectations of the program and personal career goals. The letter should be no longer than two typed pages.
- Two letters of reference: These may be from Teachers, Employers, Community Leaders, etc.
Application Procedure
Prospective students must submit a complete application to the Registrar's Office by the application deadline - January 15, 2012.
A complete application includes:
- Application for Admission form/Or
- Apply on-line www.tru.ca/williamslake
- $25.50 Application Processing Fee (if you have never applied or attended TRU before)
- Official transcripts from secondary school and/or other post-secondary institutions (except TRU)
- Letter of Introduction
- Two letters of Reference
- For high school students - A copy of your official grade 11 transcript is required as well as a certified interim grade 12 transcript for proof of courses in progress with your current interim grades from the appropriate instructor or student counsellor.
- For other students currently upgrading prerequisites, we require an official transcript for proof of courses in progress as well as your current interim grades from the appropriate instructor.
- Proof of Citizenship or Landed Immigrant Status is required if you were not born in Canada.
Re-Application
If you were not accepted or applied but did not attend last year, you must resubmit to the Registrar's Office a new application form along with your most recent transcripts, a new letter of Introduction and new References letters. Please note TRU does not keep waitlists for the BSN program so each time you re-apply you must submit new documents to the Registrar's Office. Also note that the Registrar's Office will not return your letter of introduction or reference letters to you.
Selective Admission Process
A selective admission process is used to determine admission to year one of the BSN program. During the selective admission process a structured format is followed with all applicants being evaluated against the same criteria. Applicants are ranked according to their responses and/or documents in a number of categories such as communication skills, motivation, knowledge of the profession and scholastics. Applicants are not ranked by the date of their application. Only complete applications will be considered.
Each applicant will be placed in one of the following categories:
- Accepted or Waitlist
- Not Accepted
Acceptance may be conditional until receipt of final grades of courses that are currently in progress.
Applicants have the right to appeal admission decisions. Appeal procedures are described in the Academic information section of the TRU Calendar.
Registration & Payment of Fees
You will be notified in writing by the Registrar's Office once you have been admitted to this limited enrollment program. Once admitted, you should be prepared to pay a commitment fee that is equal to a maximum of your first term fees in order to secure your seat in the program. Once the commitment fee is paid, you will receive further information from the School of Nursing. You will also be pre-registered into all required courses. Every attempt is made to give transfer credit where applicable. Please refer to the TRU Calendar for tuition fees and approximate book costs.
Upon acceptance and admission to the program, you will be required to provide the following:
- Immunization record
- Requisite Skills and Abilities Form
Upon payment of Commitment Fee, you will be required to obtain:
- CRNBC Student membership (includes criminal record check)
- CPR – ‘C’
- WHMIS certification
Immunization & Requisite Skills and Abilities forms will be sent to you with admission confirmation to the program. You will be given a limited time to complete these forms and return them to the Registrar's Office.
Special Admission Status
Applicants with an appropriate combination of previous training and experience may be considered for "Special Admission Status". Please refer to the calendar and to the Chairperson of Nursing for specific details.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all the required documents are received by TRU from other institutions or agencies. All official documentation must be issued within two years of application and must be received in sealed envelopes from the issuing institution.
