Continuing Studies: Arts
Act One-Character Development-learn how to bring your character to life! This course is designed to teach you the skills to develop your stage character and find ways to create that life on stage. Dimensions of characterization will include: movement & body language; voice & diction; developing a persona; character mood intensity; motivation; and learning how to create a character development sheet that will define your character’s objective.
Instructor: Laurie Walters is no stranger to theatre; she began acting at the age of 16 where she portrayed Anne in The Diary of Anne Frank. She has acted in over 30 productions. Laurie started directing at the age of 22. The plays she has directed include: Barefoot in the Park, Twelve Angry Men, A Street Car Named Desire, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Laurie has many years of experience teaching theatre to children, youth and adults. No acting experience necessary-students must have willingness to participate in the finale performance on May 18th.

In this course students will be introduced to the First Nation Traditional Art of Carving. The instructor will discuss recommended woods and appropriate tools, as well as how to design and prepare a template. During this 24-hour hands-on course, students will also be introduced to the process of carving, finishing techniques, and will be given the opportunity to carve a small wall hanging.
Our local instructor has 20+ years of traditional carving experience. He works in a variety of mediums including wood and metals. To see a sample of his work, visit the TRU-WL Gathering Place; he is part of the team of artists who completed the doors.

In this second offering of the Beginner Carving, students will be re-introduced to the First Nation Traditional Art of Carving. Bob Ross Landscaped Oil Painting - XFIN 0360
Put your dreams on canvas and experience the Joy of Painting (A Bob Ross) Oil Painting Class. Discover your creative talents and after only one class you will have a completed, ready to frame, oil painting from your own talents plus a wonderful feeling of joy in your accomplishment. Caricature & Cartooning - XFIN 0460
This course is for the beginner to intermediate cartoonists wishing to learn the art of bringing character to their cartoons. Learn to create your own character, layout a situation, and then ink it to complete the project. Using both dry and wet media, students will create cartoons, caricatures and drawings that will become a finished storyboard. Supply list available at time of registration.

Introduction to Model Railroading
Have you thought about starting a new hobby? Do you have an interest in trains and railroading? Why not try Model railroading as your new hobby?
This course will provide all the information for a student to get started in the hobby of model railroading. This course will include: Planning and design – historical references, blueprint reading; Table construction – basic carpentry skills; Laying track – reading from plans, executing design into actual scale size, plus manual skills acquired; Wiring – learning and using 120 volt AC, and 12 volt DC, safety around electricity, and practical experiences; Scenery – design practices, study of natural settings and the application of modelling/plaster compounds.

Life Drawing-Introduction
In this beginner drawing class, students will be introduced to drawing with contour lines, blind contour drawing, negative and positive images, making your marks and lines mean something, as well as other drawing techniques. This class is intended for those artists who may have not had an opportunity to draw the human form and are new to the process. At the end of each class a quick critique and show of the night’s work may be done.
Students will need to provide their own paper and charcoal, pencils, ink, or pastels. A supply list will be distributed upon registration.

Life Still Drawing 2 will expand on the Introduction Life Still Drawing course. Students will start with a review of contour lines, blind contour drawing, negative and positive images, making your marks and lines mean something, as well as other drawing techniques. This class is intended for those artists who may have not had an opportunity to draw the human form, and are new to the process, as well as some who may just want the stimulation of being around other artists and the use of a model. This artistic course dabbles in making hobby drawings and fun doodles into the creative art form of comics. While improving drawing skills and creating new ideas, the course will bring sketches to life through story creations. Prepare to have fun and learn a new way of artistic expression.

This introductory course will cover:
- your camera and accessories
- controlling exposure
- aperture and shutter speed
- composing interesting photographs
- using the on-camera flash
- creating painless people pictures
Students will need to bring their camera to class.

This course is suitable for beginners who wish to try painting and need to acquire the drawing skills required to facilitate the painting process, and for more experienced students who want to refine their drawing technique as it relates to crafting a successful painting. Working with both dry and wet media, students will create drawings that are designed to transition into paintings. Students follow the week-to-week projects, while they apply the lessons to more self directed paintings and drawings that they create in class, under guidance. Special attention will be given to develop the artist's personal style. A supply list will be distributed at registration.

Writing Workshop
Short stories and poetry have become one of the most popular forms of writing today. Both are forms of storytelling, be it fiction or from life experience. Mastering the art of storytelling, the pacing, development, plotting, imagery and expression can be demanding. This workshop will give you the opportunity to explore your own poetry, short stories, journalism, and receive supportive and intelligent feedback to develop your craft.
Sage Birchwater will be instructing the workshop. Sage is a freelance writer and editor as well as a published author. He has written many stores of the Ulkatcho people; "Ulkatcho; Stories of the Grease Trail"; "Ulkatch'en: the People of Ulkatcho"; and "Ulkatcho Food and Medicine Plants". In 1995 he had his book "Chiwid" published. Sage has worked as a photographer, trapper, environmentalist educator, oral history researcher, and staff writer for the Williams Lake Tribune. He was born in Victoria and resides in Williams Lake. His short story, "A Sage is Born", allows you to follow his path from his life as Richard Stamford to the Chilcotin and his life as Sage Birchwater.
