School of Trades and Technology offers programs to a wide variety of industries. The school provides the type of training that the client desires, fitting their schedule and cost limitations.  If your training need is not listed, please contact us as it is most likely offered.

Carpentry

Carpentry “Red-Seal” Exam Preparation Course (XCRP 0710)
Dates: TBD    Fri 7 – 10 pm, Sat 8 am – 4 pm $795 (60 hrs)

This course is designed to assist carpenters wishing to challenge the “Red Seal” exam.  In order to attempt the exam, written proof of at least 9720 direct hours of work experience in the trade is required.  Before registering for this course, please contact the Industry Training Authority at 1 (866) 660-6011 to confirm your eligibility.   For more information and to pre-register, please call (250) 371-5658 or e-mail trades@tru.ca.

Driver Training

Certified ICBC Air Brake Course (XDRV 0610)
All Air Brake classes are: Fri 6–10 pm, Sa/Su 8am–5 pm $175 (20 hrs).  Please choose one:

This course is designed to prepare students for the ICBC written examination for an air endorsement to operate air brake equipped highway vehicles.  Students must have a valid BC driver’s license.  Course fee includes the ICBC certified practical exam.

Forklift Operator Certification (XDRV 0500)
All Forklift Operator Certification courses are: Sat 8 am - 4 pm, $225 (incl text), (8 hrs).  Please choose one:

This course is designed to provide students with a certification of training that meets Worksafe BC Recognition Program criteria.  Students must have a minimum of 15 hours of forklift experience. 
This course is not for beginners.

Electrical and Electronics

Application of Electrical Codes and Standards Course (XELC 0630)
Dates: TBD    T/Th  6 – 9 pm, $795 (texts & exam extra) (60 hrs)

This course is designed for qualified electricians who may want to write the Safety Authority provincial exam to attain their Field Site Representative status / Contractors License (A, B, C ticket).   Those wanting a code refresher or who do not meet the prerequisites and do not plan to write the exam may also enroll.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) – Level 1 (XELC 0670)
Dates: TBD    Fri 6:30 - 9:30 pm, Sat 8 am - 3:30 pm $625 (30 hrs)

This course is designed to introduce electricians, as well as those who are familiar with conventional motor control theory, to the basic operating principles and various field applications of Programmable Logic Controllers.  The course will be based on Allen Bradley systems but may also include GE and Modicon brands.  Please call for further information (250) 371-5658 or email trades@tru.ca.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) – Level 2 (XELC 0770)
April 20 - May 12  Fri 6:30-9:30 pm, Sat 8 am – 3:30 pm $775 (40 hrs)

The course is an extension of the PLC Level 1 course and is directed towards individuals that have a basic knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers and are able to design circuits that use standard instructions such as timers and counters.  This course moves onto more advanced instructions that include math, compare, move, program control and several other instructions found in industrial applications.  The student will be challenged to create PLC programs that operate a conveyor system as well as an analog liquid level control system.  In addition, the student will get an introduction into the InTouch® HMI software with the intent to operate lab equipment.  To preregister call (250) 371-5658 or e-mail trades@tru.ca.

Industrial Electrician “Red-Seal” Exam Preparation Course (XELC 0790)
On-line Delivery or Classroom Session Available $795 (60 hrs)

Heavy Construction

Heavy Equipment Operator Challenge Exam Preparation Course (XMEC 0730)
Dates: TBD    Fri 6:30 - 9:30 pm, Sat 8 am - 3:30 pm $545 (texts and test extra) (40 hrs)

This classroom course is designed to assist heavy equipment operators wanting to challenge the Industry Training Authority HEO exam.  In order to attempt the exam, written proof of direct work experience in the trade is required.  Before registering for this course, please contact the Industry Training Authority at 1(866) 660-6011 to confirm your eligibility.  For more information and to pre-register, please call (250) 371-5658.

Mechanical

Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (XDRV 0630)
April 20 - 22  Fri 6–10 pm, Sa/Su 8 am–5 pm $395 (incl all texts & manual)
All mechanics involved in auto and commercial vehicle inspections must have successfully completed a training program and the provincial exam.  Prerequisite: TQ or an I/P in Automotive, Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport.

CFC/HCFC/HFC Control Course (XENV 0500)
May 11 - 12 Fri 6 - 10 pm, Sat 8 - 10 am $160 (incl text and exam) (6 hrs)

Upon successful completion, students will receive an Environment Canada’s certificate as well as a certificate number for refrigerant handling.

Vehicle Air Conditioning Repair & CFC/HCFC/HFC Control Course (XATO 0730)
May 11 - 12 Fri 6 - 10 pm, Sat 8 am - 5 pm $295 (incl all texts and exam) (12 hrs)

This course will cover the following topics for air conditioning systems in vehicles: principles of heat, basic air conditioning systems (all products including heavy duty equipment), components and their function, system services and repair of disabled systems.  Upon successful completion, students will also receive an Environment Canada's certificate as well as a certificate number for refrigerant handling.  For more information and to pre-register, please call (250) 371-5658.

Commercial Transport Mechanic “Red-Seal” Exam Preparation Course (XMEC 0490)
Continuous Entry $795 (test and texts extra)

This distance course is designed to assist commercial transport mechanics wanting to challenge the “Red Seal” exam.  In order to attempt the exam, written proof of 8910 hours of direct work experience in the trade is required.  Before registering for this course, please contact the Industry Training Authority at 1(866) 660-6011 to confirm your eligibility.  For more information and to pre-register, please call (250) 371-5658.

Cross Connection Certification Course (XGAS 0640)
June 4 - 8 Mon – Fri 8 am – 2 pm (25 hrs)
Exam: June 9 Sa 8 am – 3 pm (6 hrs)
Tuition: $795 (plus BCWWA exam fee, payable by student) includes text

This 25 hour course instructs eligible students on the principles and controls combined with testing of backflow prevention devices.  Upon successful completion of the BCWWA theory and device exam, students will obtain their Cross Connection Control Certification.

Cross Connection Recertification Course (XGAS 0650)
June 4 - 7  Mon to Thurs  6 – 9 pm (12 hrs)
Exam: June 9, Sat 8 am – 3 pm (6 hrs)
Tuition: $525 (plus BCWWA exam fee, payable by student) includes text.

This exam preparation course is for students who are BCWWA certified in Cross Connection Control but are due for recertification.  Review of current testing procedures, introduction to the new reference materials, local bylaws and plumbing code will be covered. 

Cross Connection Control Testing Only (XGAS 0680)
June 9 Sat 8 am - 3 pm (6 hrs)
Tuition: $165 (plus BCWWA exam fee, payable by student)

Gasfitter Class B (XGAS 0610)
Date: TBD, Fall 2012.

This course provides a combination of practical and theory training, enabling students to prepare for the Provincial exam. Prerequisite for Class B: Must be the holder of a trade qualification in plumbing, sprinkler-fitting, steam-fitting, or refrigeration.  To pre-register, please call (250) 371-5658.

Welding

Students are required to supply CSA safety boots, welding gloves, and welding caps.  Welding helmet will be provided by TRU.

Introduction to Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) (XWLD 0510)
Dates: TBD    Mon/Wed 7 - 10 pm $335 (24 hrs)

Gain skills in GMAW (MIG) wire feed welding.  Several different types of wires and shielding gasses will be utilized in a variety of welding positions.  Cutting and fitting of joints will be stressed, with the opportunity to plan and begin a small project.  Participants are encouraged to bring their home welders.

Introduction Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) (XWLD 0530)
April 3 - 26 Tues/Thurs 7 - 10 pm $365 (24 hrs)

This course is designed to allow the participants to gain skills in GTAW (TIG) welding.  Several different types of filler rods will be used to TIG weld.  Steel, stainless steel and aluminum will be utilized in a variety of welding positions.

Welding Upgrading (XWLD 0410) and Welder Testing (XWLD 0430)

The School of Trades and Technology is a licensed testing agency for the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Branch and the Canadian Welding Bureau, providing welding testing and certification for certified company and union authorized CWB testing.   We also offer a Welding Upgrading program that gives students practice and instruction in specific welding procedures which leads to further weld tests and certifications under CWB or ASME.  For more information, call (250) 828-5105.

Water and Wastewater Treatment Programs and Courses

TRU has comprehensive industry relevant programs and courses related to all aspects of water and wastewater treatment.  Programs and courses are available in the classroom, on-line and blended models utilizing Kamloops’ premier water treatment facility.

WaterSafe WTTP 020
Online & Print Format, Continuous Intake    $140.00 (6 hrs)

An introductory course for owners and operators of small water systems (campsite operators, Parks, ranches, administrators, water equipment vendors, people with backyard swimming pools etc.) that provides owners and operators access to up-to-date, practical information on the safe delivery of drinking water by small water systems.  TRU WaterSafe Certificate awarded on completion of a qualifying exam.
