Foundation Training (formerly known as Entry-Level Trades Training):
Foundation training is designed for those seeking basic entry-level skills to work in a specific trade of their choice and are not presently indentured into an Apprenticeship program. This program prepares students for entry into the Apprenticeship Program, and it most cases will lead to first year technical training credit (with the exception of Commercial Transport and Heavy Duty).
Foundation programs are a newly renamed category of ITA credentialed programs, introduced in April 2006. They offer entry-level, school-based training that give trainees the knowledge and essential skills needed for entry into a particular industry occupation.
Foundation programs involve limited on-the-job training, and trainees do not require an employer/sponsor to participate.
These programs offer a linkage to one or more apprenticeship programs and may precede enrollment in a full apprenticeship. They may also provide credit towards apprenticeship training. For example, many of the programs known as Entry Level Trades Training (ELTT) result in a minimum of level 1 apprenticeship technical training credit.

Apprenticeship Training:
Apprenticeship training is for those currently working in the industry, and are indentured into a formal agreement between their employer and the Industry Training Authority. Students must have a valid Trade Worker identification number and registration number (obtained from the Industry Training Authority).
Apprenticeship is paid, work-based training, usually combined with post-secondary education. Typically, about 80-85% of an apprenticeship is made up of work-based training and the other 15-20% is made up of technical training taken in a classroom and shop setting. The length of an apprenticeship can range from one to five years, but most require four years to complete.
Successful completion of both components, along with examinations, is required before an apprentice earns a certificate or ticket, and becomes a certified tradesperson in his or her trade.
Many trades, known as the "Red Seal" trades, have nationally recognized certification standards. The credentials of a certified tradesperson who has successfully earned a Red Seal ticket are recognized across Canada.
