RED TREE Project creates opportunities for students...

The RED TREE Project is a research initiative conducted out of the School of Tourism at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. Under the direction of Dr. Rob Hood, the project aims to help rural communities affected by the mountain pine beetle to diversify their economies through the development of tourism products. REDTREE has received funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada, the Southern Interior Beetle Action Coalition and Shuswap Tourism. Research conducted in three rural communities (Princeton, Lytton, and the Shuswap region) will lead to the creation of product development and implementation guides.

The RED TREE project has created many opportunities for students to get involved and has brought the real world situation into our classrooms. Students from events and conventions diploma programs, to tourism management degrees have been given the chance to apply their knowledge and offer their contributions to the project since day one. The RED TREE project hosted a Rural Tourism Conference on April 6-8th, 2010 at the South Thompson Guest Ranch. Over 140 delegates participated in a highly engaging and successful three day event.
