Work Related Experience: Phil carries over 20 years of community event, retreat and outdoor leadership in his programmer’s backpack.
His extensive retreat, conference and event management experience span a portfolio of regional, national and international projects with non-profit organizations, corporate teams and international development groups, including the Anglican Church of Canada, BC Wildlife Park, British Columbia Bluegrass Workshops, ICBC, the Medical Council of Canada, Naramata Conference Centre, Neskonlith Indian Band, Partners in Community Leadership, Pinnacle Youth Works Inc., Salmon Arm Leisure Services, Thompson/Shuswap/Okanagan School Districts, the United Church of Canada, URM (Urban Rural Mission) Canada, and the World Council of Churches.
Phil’s company, Luminous Experiential Event Designs, is committed to producing exceptional learning, retreat and recreational opportunities that promote healthy human connections within the wider natural environment. He is a program associate with the Canadian Adventure and Education Centre (CANADEC), former marketing and program coordinator at Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre, and a former co-director of Edmonton’s Concrete Theatre. Phil’s freelance days in marketing and graphic design add a particular visual arts spin on much of his work and leadership.
Education: Phil is a graduate of the University of Alberta where he studied applied methods of theatre, facilitation and community development, including a welcome season in residence at the Banff School of the Arts. He is also a certified instructor of Challenge Adventure Courses and a paddle instructor with the Recreational Canoeing Association of British Columbia.
Research Interests: Phil’s research interests include experiential program design in the combined fields of natural science, ecology and culture; the dynamics of culture, society and ritual; and applied experience service marketing for festivals and events.
He is currently contributing to the research, development and design of a major land based recreation and tourism trails initiative throughout the Shuswap Watershed.
Publications or Personal Hobbies: Phil lives in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, with his wife, Kathy and their two boys, Benjamin and Jacob. He serves as a director on the board of the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society, and as a Jack Rabbit Ski Coach with the Larch Hills Nordic Society.
