Water Instructors


Adrain LaSalle-Lowe, B.Sc.Phys.Ed, B.Ed.

A graduate of the Adventure Studies Diploma Program (2004), Adrian co-teaches the raft-guides course and swift-water rescue courses for TRU and Rescue Canada. Currently living in Squamish, B.C. with his wife Katie and daughter Dayah, Adrian has been leading whitewater trips down the Elaho, Cheakamus and Squamish Rivers for various raft companies, in addition to Chilco/Chilcotin multi-day trips with Canadian River Expeditions.

Adrian works as a professional firefighter with The District Of North Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services, exercising his rescue skills in the North Shore canyons, rivers, & mountains.


Becky Bristow, B.Sc, KinesiologyUniversity of CalgaryCalgary, AB, with a major in outdoor education/outdoor pursuits. Advanced Swift Water River Rescue, ACA level 3 kayak instructor and CKBC level 2, Fly fishing guide certificate (Sweetwater Fly Fishing Guide School- Montana).

Becky is a professional athlete who, as well as travelling the world to explore rivers spends time instructing, guiding, film making, giving slide show presentations, sports modelling and does some writing. She is sponsored by Patagonia, Fluid kayaks, Clifbar, Icebreaker.  She is self employed - Wild Soul Creations and Boulder Smokin’ Grill.  Her passions are kayaking, fly fishing, teaching, cooking, horseback riding, biking, hunting, and travelling.

Florian Scharlock is a graduate of the Adventure Guide Diploma and teaches whitewater kayaking, swift water rescue and rafting at TRU. He spent most of his raft guiding career working in the Robson Valley until he moved to Smithers, BC where he guided multi-day trips on the Babine River. He also teaches swift water rescue courses for Raven Rescue.

During the winter seasons he has been working as a tail-guide for Crescent Spur Heli-skiing since 2007.


Jamie Boulding, BCRA Senior Instructor, BCWKA (BC White Water Kayaking Association) Senior Instructor, ACSKG, (Association of Canadian Sea Kayak Guides) Full Guide, ASKGBC, Full Guide. 

Jamie has been involved with outdoor pursuits all his life as an instructor and manager of Strathcona Park Lodge Outdoor Education Centre. His main focus is on river and sea kayaking, and his involvement in the industry includes many course standards committees and examination duties. Jamie helps lead the Adventure Studies Department's sea kayaking courses.


Jim Lavalley, B.Sc. (Biology), B.A. (Economics and Geography)

Since 1972, Jim has been fully involved in the adventure travel industry. He has descended over 60 river systems in Canada and the U.S. He has considerable experience as a co-owner and business person, an environmental planner, a river guide, an instructor-examiner and as an industry advisor and project manager for the government, educational institutions, legal firms and private industry. Jim is the owner of Rescue 3 North, the company which holds the rights to Swiftwater Rescue Technician courses in Canada.


John Dutton, Hospitality Management Diploma and Bachelor of Commerce Degree.

John lives in Nelson, British Columbia and operates Nelson Whitewater Rafting Company.  He is a BC River Outfitter's Association Raft Guide Examiner and an assistant Swiftwater Rescue Instructor with Rescue Canada.  Also, John is on the board of directors for the Nelson and Kootenay Lake Destination Marketing Organization.

After graduating high-school in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island John gained a Hospitality Management Diploma and Bachelor of Commerce Degree before starting his career in adventure tourism. In his spare time John will be found kayaking the whitewater of the West Kootenay or ski touring its back country.  In the winter he works on the guiding staff at Monashee Powder Snowcats.

Randy Clement, B.A. Recreation Administration

Randy started teaching  canoeing in 1972(as a University student) and has continued the adventure working as an instructor, river guide, Instructor Trainer and makes his home in the Canadian Rockies, very near the Kananaskis River. He owns Rocky Mountain Canoe Adventures and is co-owner of the Rocky Mountain Paddling Centre in Calgary. He volunteers with the Lower Kananaskis River Users Association, Paddle Alberta, and the Professional River Outfitters Association of Alberta.  Favorite rivers: Kootaney-B.C., Kananaskis-Alberta, Nahanni- NWT, Colorado-Arizona.  Goal in Life: " To break even" - RM


Sam Ewing


Shawn Burleigh, Graduate of Adventure Guide Diploma (2009), Leader 3/Instructor 3 kayak Instructor (Canoe Kayak Canada), Swift Water Rescue Instructor (Rescue Canada), Paddle Raft Certification (BCROA)

A recent graduate from the Adventure Guide Diploma Shawn has will be going into his fourth season of raft guiding. After completing the Kayak program with TRU he received his first job instructing kayaking for the university.  In the winter Shawn dogsled guides for Cold Fire Creek Dogsledding, Cross country skis, and snow boards with his dog Dann.
