Imagine the Resources a University Can Provide to Support Your Career!

In the "old days," adventure tourism career training used to be hit-and-miss at best. In the Adventure Studies Department at Thompson Rivers University, we are committed to your career development. This includes coaching you toward a successful application to TRU, helping you make the most of your studies while you are studying with us, and supporting you after you have finished.

The following list shows some of the advantages of attending the Adventure Diploma, the Canadian Mountain & Ski Guide Certification Program, or the Bachelor of Tourism Management in Adventure Studies. Your career training choices are crucial to your future!

Networking

Students in the Adventure Studies Department come into contact with some of North America's top adventure instructors, guides and business operators. A student in the Adventure Guide Diploma or the Canadian Mountain & Ski Guide Certification Program will study with over thirty different instructors in the course of their training at TRU.

Bachelor of Tourism Management Adventure Studies students are involved in consulting work for real-world clients, and, if they choose to, can travel to Chile on an international field trip to conduct community development work in eco and adventure tourism. This is the way education should be!

Job Postings

The Adventure Studies Department has a "jobs board" on campus where the dozens of jobs that come in each year to the department are posted. Many, many adventure businesses prefer to hire our because of their superior training and many students are recruited specifically for their understanding and expertise. This is only available to Adventure Studies Department students and graduates.

Email Job Postings

In addition to the on-campus "jobs board," the Department Secretary regularly sends job postings by email to graduates. This lets TRU graduates to access current job opportunities!

Co-op Program

The Bachelor of Tourism Management in Adventure Studies has a co-op option where students spend two work terms over the course of their degree working in a co-op placement. As a student, you declare your interest in co-op after you arrive at TRU. A Tourism Co-op Placement Coordinator then approaches employers for you to find the type of work experience you are interested in. These are paid work placements.

Career Coaching and Counselling

All the instructors in the Adventure Studies Department have longstanding experience in the adventure industry. They have built significant careers and have a broad perspective on the industry. Their goal is to help you build your career!
