General Information

1. Where will the conference be held?
The conference will be held at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. Campus maps and information including parking lots can be found here.

2. What sort of weather can I expect?
Typical weather in Kamloops in early October is dry and crisp fall weather with daytime temperatures around 15ºC. October is also one of the driest months in the calendar year. Consult 7 day Kamloops weather forecast here.

4. How can I get to Kamloops?

  • By air: Kamloops is served by airlines including Air Canada and Westjet. Details on carriers can be found here. Flights to Kelowna, BC, are served by a number of airlines. It is approximately 2 hours by car from the Kelowna airport to Kamloops.
  • By bus: The Greyhound bus takes approximately 4.5 to 6 hours to reach Kamloops from Vancouver. The Kamloops bus depot is approximately 2km from the Thompson Rivers University campus. For more information, check with Greyhound.
  • By rail: ViaRail leaves Pacific Central Station in Vancouver approximately three times a week for Kamloops. The trip takes between 8 and 9 hours and the train arrives in the northern part of Kamloops during the night. For more information, visit Via Rail.
  • By car: Kamloops is approximately 3.5 hours by car from Vancouver, BC. Trans Canada Highway 1 and Yellowhead Highway 5 both run through Kamloops. For up-to-the-minute highway road conditions, visit the Drive BC website.

5.   How can I get around Kamloops?

  • City buses: Information on bus routes, fares and schedules can be found here.
  • Taxis: To request taxi service, call Yellow Cabs: 250 374 3333 or Kami Cabs: 250 374 5151.
  • Shuttle bus to and from some hotels: Shuttle service will be provided from some hotels to TRU during the days of the conference. Further information on the schedule and pick up points will be provided at the conference website closer to the conference dates.

7.   What other events can I attend?
In addition to the conference sessions, keynotes and workshops, there are several pre-conference activities of note. These include:

  • Graduate Students Symposium
  • Pre-conference Symposia/Workshops across a range of topics
  • Excursions and tours to places of interest in Kamloops and region
  • A gala dinner and dance with food, fun, entertainment and live music
  • Wine tasting

9. Who is the pre-conference keynote speaker?

10. Can I present at the pre-conference symposia?
Graduate students can submit proposals to present their work at the conference and details and the submission form can be found here.

11.  Are there any travel grants for students?
Unfortunately, no travel grants are available but students pay a discounted rate.

12. What are the networking and job hunting opportunities?
There will be an Education, Career, and Assessment Showcase in conjunction with the Publishers’ Displays.

Conference Presenters


13. What is the deadline to submit presentation proposals?
Proposals will be accepted until May 13, 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time.

14. When will I hear whether or not my proposal has been accepted?
An email notification will be sent to you by June 30.

15. What type of presentation can I deliver?
The conference will feature demonstrations/performances, panels, workshops, papers/reports, mini-sessions, discussion sessions, and interactive poster sessions. For further details on each of these sessions, please consult the call for proposals.

16. When and where should I go to present?
Please consult the program to find the date, time, and location of your presentation. The program will be posted on the web later. Be sure to arrive at your assigned room at least 10 minutes for set-up before your presentation.

17. What equipment is provided?
All conference classrooms are equipped with an Internet-enabled computer with speakers, a projector and a whiteboard. To avoid connection and other technology-related issues, presenters are asked to bring their presentation on a CD or USB stick, or to access it on a public computer on the Internet for use on the classroom computer. All presenters and participants will be provided with wireless Internet access for own devices. For sessions requiring participants to have access to computers, there are some computer labs that will be available, so make a note in your proposal submission.

18. I am a Mac user. Can I have access to a Mac at the conference?
Unfortunately, only PCs are available for presenters and other participants, so please be advised to format your presentation for PC access.

19. As a presenter, am I paid or do I receive a discount for registration?
Unfortunately, we cannot subsidise or offer a discount for presenters with the exception of  the early bird rates.

20. What is the deadline for proposal submissions?
May 13.

21. When will I hear whether my proposal has been accepted?
A notification email will be sent to you soon after the proposal deadline.

22. What do I need to know as an exhibitor?
Exhibitors are encouraged to submit proposals for promotional presentations and workshops.

23. How can I be a reviewer of the conference presentation proposals?
Answer YES to the related question at the end of the proposal submission form, and you will be considered. Please note that only those selected as reviewers will be contacted.
