ACCUPLACER

What is the ACCUPLACER?

The ACCUPLACER System is designed to provide placement, advisement, and guidance information for students entering Thompson Rivers University (TRU). The five main tests (reading comprehension, sentence structure, WritePlacer Plus, arithmetic and elementary algebra) are presented in a computer-adaptive mode. All tests are untimed except for WritePlacer Plus that has a one hour time limit.  Basic calculators are permitted for all program testing except for ABE/University Preparation. To obtain a detailed description of each test, please click here: ACCUPLACER test descriptions. For more information and sample questions, please refer to the College Board ACCUPLACER website.

What TRU programs require the ACCUPLACER?

The ACCUPLACER is an entrance requirement or advisement tool for various TRU programs.

How much does the ACCUPLACER cost to write?

A $35 entry assessment testing fee must be paid before test results will be processed.

How do I register for the ACCUPLACER?  What happens next?

  • Schedule an appointment to write the ACCUPLACER through the Assessment Centre by phone (250-828-5470), fax (250-371-5690), email assess@tru.ca or register online.
  • Complete the ACCUPLACER entry assessment on established date.  For the testing session, you must bring picture ID, the $35 testing fee and a basic calculator if permitted.
  • Results will be forwarded to the Admissions Office and/or the chairperson or lead instructor of the program within one week of writing the test as long as the entry assessment fee has been paid.
  • The Admissions office or the chair/lead instructor will notify the student of their results.
  • These scores are valid for one year.

What if I need to rewrite the ACCUPLACER?

An applicant may rewrite one or more of the ACCUPLACER tests after their initial attempt.  It is highly recommended that the applicant spend several weeks reviewing the subject matter before attempting the rewrite.  If the applicant’s scores on the rewrite still do not meet the program requirements, before the applicant can attempt a subsequent rewrite, s/he must submit documentation indicating successful participation in an upgrading course or tutoring program, or wait until at least one year has passed since the last testing session.  The fee for a rewrite is $25.

When does the ACCUPLACER take place?

Every Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m. at TRU Kamloops.

What scores do I need on the ACCUPLACER, and how do I interpret the scores?

At TRU,  the minimum scores required on the ACCUPLACER entrance tests vary by program and are listed in the table below.
