Welcome to the School of Social Work and Human Service at Thompson Rivers University. Since 1971 TRU has offered a rich tradition of excellent post-secondary education for those seeking careers in social work and human services. The School currently offers a full range of certificate, diploma, baccalaureate and graduate programs providing the most advanced education for students seeking the knowledge and skills to begin careers as human service workers and social workers. This website will assist you to become familiar with the programs, initiatives and activities of our School. Please see What's Happening, below, for current events.
The School currently serves about 300 students in our on-campus programs in Kamloops, Williams Lake, Merritt and Burnaby, and about 100 students throughout Canada through our Open Learning Division. School of Social Work and Human Service faculty are experienced, enthusiastic and committed teachers who bring a full range of practice and research experience to the classroom. The School is committed to the principles of social justice, anti-oppressive practice, respect for diversity and social change. The School is also highly committed to students, though the use of small classes, participatory and interactive teaching methods, inclusion of students in governance and decision-making, and partnership with community.
The School of Social Work and Human Service is committed to the inclusion of Aboriginal perspectives throughout all programs, and seeks to enhance the cultural safety of the curriculum for all students. An excellent working relationship with the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) in Merritt and Burnaby has established the offering of the NVIT/TRU Bachelor of Social Work degree in an Aboriginal culturally-centred context.
In addition to certificate, diploma and baccalaureate programs on campus, the School offers an on-line Certificate in Social Services and Graduate Certificate in Child and Youth Mental Health. The School is also currently developing a Master of Social Work degree on-campus program. The focus of the proposed MSW program is on leadership in community-based practice.

The School seeks a Director to provide leadership for the School within the structure of the new Faculty.
