Science Transition Mentorship (TM) Program

What is the Science TM Program?

The TRU Science Transition Mentorship Team is a group of senior Science student volunteers who help first-time TRU students make the transition into university-life by providing support, information and advice during their first semester at TRU. 

Why a TM mentor can make a difference to a new Science student's success?

TM mentors are senior Science students who are approachable and experienced.  They can give advice on study techniques and helpful tips for getting the most out of your lectures and labs,  balancing school and other committments, finding out about extra-curricular activities on campus, and making new friends. TM mentees have the advantage over other students by having someone who is knowledgable about campus life to give them advice, as well as having somone who can just lend an ear when needed.

Why join the Science TM team as a Mentor?

The TM program will provide mentors with a meaningful volunteer experience where they will build relationships with other students and Faculty.  The Science TM program will also help mentors develop leadership skills as well as contribute to their personal development.

What is the duration of the program?

The TM Program is designed to run for one semester for the mentee.  Mentors can continue with the program over several semsters if they wish.

What are the expectations of Science TM Mentors?

They Will be given the names and contact information for one or two first-time TRU students and will be asked to make contact with them in the first week of the semester.

Over the course of the semester the TM Mentors will be expected to communicate with their mentees at least two to three times a month, electronically or in-person.

TM Mentors will also have the opportunity to participate in Student Leadership Program events over the course of the semester.
