Respiratory Therapy Admission Requirements for Diploma or Dual Credential (Diploma & Degree)

A selective admission process is used to determine admission to year one of the Respiratory Therapy program. Year 1 is the same for both the diploma and dual credential option. Since there are a limited number of seats in this program applications should be submitted early. Application deadline is March 31. Applications are accepted after this date, but applicants may be put on a waitlist. It is important to complete all aspects of your application; however, if some aspects are missing or currently in progress (CIP), then a letter explaining that should be included with the application.

Respiratory Therapy Admission Requirements for Fast Track (F/T) Option

This option applies to applicants who have a degree (preferably BSc and within the last 5 years) and would like accelerated access to the Respiratory Therapy Program by direct entry into the second year of the program. Applicants with an Associate Degree in Science (minimum of 60 credits) may contact the program coordinator to discuss their options for entrance into the program.

Admission into the Fast Track option is determined by a selective admission process based on academic qualifications. The number of seats are limited. Applications for the F/T option should be submitted by the end of January. Applicants who meet the fast-track admission requirements are ranked and selected for acceptance according to the following:

The applicant should be notified of their acceptance into the F/T option of the RT program by March. At this time, the applicant normally receives a conditional acceptance into the F/T program, subject to the successful completion of the distance courses listed below. These courses must be completed prior to commencement of year two of the RT program (ie August 30th). Based on special circumstances and with approval from the Program Coordinator, an applicant may be granted admission into second year prior to completion of all the distance courses, but they must successfully complete the courses to remain in the program. In some circumstances, the applicant will be asked to complete the distance courses first to determine their acceptance into the F/T program. Please contact Linda Mueller (see email address below), if you wish to receive more information on the admission process.

Courses which must be sucessfully completed by distance study prior to consideration and commencement of year two are listed below. Successful completion of the courses requires a minimum of 50% on the final exam and a minimum of 60% in the course. It is recommended that you take the HLTH 1981, RESP 1693, RESP 1683 prior to the HLTH 2511.

RESP 1691 Pulmonary Physiology and Introduction to Ventilation
RESP 1683 Respiratory Therapy Equipment
HLTH 1981 Medical Terminology
HLTH 2511 Introduction to Pharmacology

If you wish to apply for admission into the program you are required to complete the TRU application form. Select Fall, Year 2 of the RT program on the application.

The distance courses are delivered through Thompson Rivers University’s Open Learning Division (TRU-OL). For more information and to register for the distance courses listed above, please refer to the TRU-OL website.
