The following courses will be required for program completion

ASHS 4710 Client-Centred Approach to COPD Care - Course Outline

This course focuses primarily on the knowledge and skills utilized by Health Care Professionals (HCPs) to establish good rapport and lay the foundation for a therapeutic client/professional relationship at the bedside, in rehabilitation clinics and/or in a client’s home. A focus on establishing collaborative client relationships will be examined by exploring the Patient-Centred Method and optimal interviewing skills, the variables affecting behaviour change, culture, learning styles and the impact of aging on learning will also be studied.

Currently, a COPD educator profile in Canada is being developed and the focus of this 2-course program on COPD education and disease management is intended to help interested individuals meet many, if not all, of the profile criteria that will emerge in the near future.

The cost of this course is $375.

Required Textbooks
Every Breath I Take. Hodder, R. (2001). Toronto: Stoddart Publishing (currently O/P but will be supplied to student until next revision in stock). (approx. $23)

ASHS 4720 Concepts in the Management of COPD - Course Outline

The goals of this course are two-fold: first, to provide health care professionals (HCPs) with the theoretical knowledge of the nature, causes, and effects of COPD; second, to provide the necessary background and skills to effectively assess, plan, implement, manage, and evaluate educational programs that can help COPD clients cope better with their symptoms. The course is intended to be a natural progression for those HCPs who have completed a CNAC-approved (Canadian Network for Asthma Care) Asthma Educator Program since clients presenting with a combination of Asthma and COPD are commonly seen clinically.

This course is also the second in the 2-course program on COPD for those individuals who have not completed a CNAC Program. Currently, a COPD educator profile in Canada is being developed and the content of this 2-course series on COPD is intended to help interested individuals meet many, if not all, of the profile criteria that will emerge in the near future.

The cost of this course is $375.
