Dean's Message

Tom DickinsonI am delighted to welcome you to the Faculty of Scienceweb page where you will find information on the faculty and the wide array of programs, new intitiatives and student activities that make TRU an exciting place to study. Every member of the Science Faculty and staff is committed to quality undergraduate teaching that integrates scientific inquiry and research possibilities. Students have the opportunity to participate in the learning process and there is an emphasis on "hands on" lab experiences. They can also expect to gain experience with sophisticated analytical equipment; give oral presentations in class; have the opportunity to gain valuable, paid work experience through cooperative education; particpate in a wide array of student clubs; thrash the faculty in the annual Erlenmyer Cup fastball tournament or roast the faculty in the annual brew-off competition for best brewed wine and beer!

In addtion to the in-class experience, students in the Faculty of Science may have opportunities to work with nationally and internationally recognized professor-researchers in their research laboratories. Research project courses are available in some programs of study and opportunities to combine research and employment exist through programs such as the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) summer research studentships.

The Faculty of Science is developing International relationships with other Universities, which will facilitate study abroad possibilities for Science Students. The most recent agreement is with Chiang Mai University in Thailand.

During the year, there are seminars and public lectures wihich widen our experience of issues at the leading edge of Science and Technology. Watch for notices of lectures in our Science Seminar Series.

The Faculty of Science web site has a great deal to offer whether you are a prospective student, a current students, an alumnus or just interested in science. I invite you to tour the site and learn more about our departments, our people and what we have to offer you.
